I know there is a few members along the river here in SA.
Been on a bit of a trip over to NSW and as we always do when driving through Barmera and Berri we fall in love.
Is there much work for someone like myself. Machinist/Fitter and Turner. A change of scenery is always good!

Dont rely on an employer , make your own stuff and sell it on ebay i reckon. You will never make any money just machining stuff up for others . Find something you cant buy , make and market it and go for it . www.monaromuscleparts.com

I really have my doubts about it, but if they do, goodluck to them, and i will believe it when i see it. Already there mate (STICKTHIS Automotive Decals and Stripes) Currently setting up my own website also. But at the end of the day its a second job and becoming my wifes job just as much as my own which is great. The riverland is a bit of a worry due to the water restrictions etc. Hopefully it will improve. every time I have visited the Beri, Renmark area I really enjoy it. Would be nice to be able to enjoy it everyday. |

What GFC in the Hunter Valley. Itll be booming for years to come. Skilled trades are always in work especially in the mines further up the valley. There are some beautiful places up there too that are not too far away from where the work is.

We have considered the Hunter many times also. But we do like that SA is near family. I have worked in the mines in SA before and loved it. But too far from anything for the wife. Fly in Fly out doesnt interest me as I like to be able to come home to the wife and kids every night.
Getting rich quick doesnt interest me. Im happy living my little life and enjoying it. Dont need money to enjoy the simple things.
The best thing about the riverland in SA is I can pickup a house with 10 acres for under $300,000. In the hunter I would be lucky to pickup a small town house for that. I grew up on a very large cereal farm and currently live in town. I miss the open space badly! I hate neighbors haha. And I hate not being able to have 16 sheds...
I know there is a heap of members on here that live in around the riverland SA. But none seem to posting to recommend it...bugger...

You should concentrate more on the fitting side of your trade. Call yourself a maintenance fitter rather than a fitter and turner. If youre a mechanically minded maintenance fitter with machining skills then youll have more job options I think.

I live in a rural area at the moment. So understand how it works. You want a job you go in a talk. Make yourself know and show that your keen. Offer to do a weeks worth of work for free.
As rigpig said. A fitter and turner is a very broad trade. I have worked as a deisil fitter, machinist, welder etc etc. Maintance fitter is what I would like to do. I love servicing and maintaining equipment and machines.
But at the same time Im happy to pick fruit until the right job comes up....

I havent read the whole post so forgive me if its mentioned before,but why not check into the caravan park for a week or two(take holidays if you work now) prior to the move you would be able to feel things out in the job scene without comitting to much just yet.

Im in Waikerie and work in Berri.
As has already been mentioned, jobs dont get advertised. From my experience you have to take what you can get initially but the right job will come once youre in the market.
I have been in the Riverland for just over a year now, after 20 plus years of visiting, and will never leave. Come and join the good life.

Im a civil engineer, originally a carpenter but went back to study a few years ago. I was prepared to do anything including pick fruit but I got part time work which led to full time (or near enough to it) with a consultancy based in Berri. I have answered your post on oldholden too with a bit more info. You might remember I used to live in Salisbury and traded a whole heap of parts with you a couple of years back.
