Guys

Taking Dr Terrys lead, its been quiet today so here are a few more quiz questions to get you all thinking. The questions are to the best of my knowledge but there may be more I've missed, especially with question 2 (like Shuttle van), but you tell me! See how you go. I don't expect anyone to get them all, unless you are Dr Terry! So Doc, give the other punters 24hrs to have a go and see how many of each they can get.

For questions 1 and 2 MODELS means for example HQ 0160 (HQ 6cyl HOLDEN cab chassis) or HT 0469 (HT V8 Kingswood sedan) or LX VD77 (LX SS hatchback) note none of these are answers to questions 1 and 2.

1. On which GMH MODELS for Australian sale was a TH400 fitted either as standard or as standard where an auto was selected? Special vehicle packages apply (BO6, XX7 etc) but not engine options (like L30 on HQ V8 LS). Part of a model run still applies ie if for part of a model run TH400 was standard fitment. I count 15.

2. Which GMH MODELS for Australian sale, fitted as standard with a manual floor shift had a shifter mounted remotely from the gearbox (ie shifter not bolted to gearbox, or part of it)? I count 13, but not imcluding the Shuttle van models if they had a floor shift. The intent here is for conventional passenger or light commercial type gearboxes like crash, aussie 3/4spd, Saginaw, Muncie, MC6, T5, Getrag etc. I don't mean to include big Isuzu/Bedford buses or trucks with Eaton boxes.

3. Which GMH VEHICLES have an aussie 4spd as standard fitment? For this question I used VEHICLES rather than MODELS, so for example you could say HQ Belmont rather than go through all the 8 x HQ Belmont MODELS (HQ Belmont is not an answer!). Special vehicle packages DO NOT apply or the list gets too big, so Sandman, HQ SS, HQ 4 door GTS, VH SS etc do not apply. I count 11.

They are hard, but someone start a list for each question by adding models and vehicles. Most people here should be able to get 50% of them straight off. All a good learning excercise!

Ill start the list off for each:

1. HX WQ37 (HX LE Monaro).

2. HG 1837 (HG Monaro GTS 350).

3. LX SS.

1. HQ81837, HJ8WS69, HJ8WT69, HX8WQ37, HX8WS69, HX8WT69, HZ8WS69, HZ8WT69, HZ8WQ69 after 9/78
If the LS 350 is ruled out then is XW8, 350 Statesman as these are also engine options as are 5.0L Prems and GTS in later models?

3. 80837, LJ GTR, LJ XU1, LH SLR & 5000, LX SLR & 5000, LX SS, HJ GTS, HX GTS, HZ GTS.

1. All 9 you put up are correct, and you have XW8 as well as it does count (I said Special Vehicle Packages apply, which XW8 is but LS with 350 isnt). So you have 10/15 - well done! There are 2 more that are relatively easy, clue is "special vehicle packages apply". The other 3 are all related.

3. You have 8 right. XU-1 and SLR5000 dont count as they are options on the base vehicles which you already have ie GTR and SL/R (in this one special vehicle packages DONT apply as there would be too many). One more easy one you have overlooked, and the other two are a bit obscure - 1 x was raced, and the other 2 are at the opposite end of the spectrum! Once you get all of these you should be able to get all of question 2.

Update

After discussions with Dr Terry today we found a few more.

Question 1 remains unchanged.

Question 2 has 17 answers. I totally overlooked a particular gearbox in 3 x models over 3 x series, and another LH Torana (hint).

Question 3 has 13 answers. The first extra one is as per the hint above for question 2. The second ill give away as its too hard and obscure - At VB Commodore release the M20 was standard as the MC6 was deemed unreliable. It wasnt until later than the MC6 became standard on a VB Commodore. VB SL and SL/E were both trimatic as standard.

48 hours has now elapsed so Ill give it a go. My answers are only for Holden badged cars, not Chevs or Bedfords, because I think Byron is counting some of these as well.

1. TH400 availability. HQ80837, HQ80469 (XW8), HJ8WS69, HJ8WT69, HX8WS69, HX8WT69, HX8WQ37, HZ8WS69, HZ8WT69, HZ8WS69 (V7H) & HZ8WQ69 (post 6/78). 11 in total.

2. Remote gearshift levers. HK80737, HK81837, HT80727, HK80837, HT81837, HG80737, HG80837, HG81837, LH8UG69 (pre 2/75) & LH8UH69 (pre 2/75). 10 in total.

3. Aussie 4-sp standard: HQ80837, HJ8WQ37, HJ8WQ69, HX8WQ69, HZ8WQ69, LC81129, LJ81129, LH8UG69 (pre 2/75), LH8UH69 (pre 2/75), LH8VD69, LX8VD69, LX8VD77 & VB8VK69. 13 in total.

Dr Terry

Here was my answers. Dr Terry is correct, I was counting Chevs and Bedfords as they are GMH complianced. Doc, if you are only counting Holden badged then to be fair you have to leave out Statesmans!

Question 1. I counted the SL/E as the HZ parts catalogue says 4/79 release and TH400 phsed out in 5/79, but Dr Terry has info that it was released in 6/79. The only one I have serious doubts over is the K20. I cant find proof you could order an auto behind the 292 6cyl in K20. You definitely could with the C20 and C30, and on the K20 with the optional 350.

HQ 1837
HQ 0469 XW8
HJ WS69
HJ WT69
HX WS69
HX WT69
HX WQ37
HZ WQ69
HZ WS69
HZ WS69 Champagne classic
HZ WT69
HZ WT69 SL/E
C20 CC209
K20 CK209
C30 CC314

Question 2:

HK 0737 Opel
HK 1837 Saginaw
HT 0737 Opel
HT 0837 Saginaw
HT 1837 Saginaw
HG 0737 Opel
HG 0837 Saginaw
HG 1837 Saginaw
LH UG69 Aussie 4spd
LH UH69 Aussie 4speed
CF 97360 Aussie 3spd
CF 97370 Aussie 3spd
CF 97560 Aussie 3spd
CF 97570 Aussie 3spd
CF 97760 Aussie 4spd
CF 97770 Aussie 4spd
CF 97790 Aussie 4spd

Question 3. Dr Terry counted HJ GTS twice (coupe and 4 door are covered by HJ GTS).

LC GTR
LJ GTR
HQ GTS
HJ GTS
HX GTS
HZ GTS
LH 4cyl S
LH 4cyl SL
LH SL/R
LX SL/R
LX SS
VB Commodore
CF Bedford 977 (35cwt)

Next time ill try to make the questions easier. This one required some knowledge of Bedfords I guess that many wouldnt have. In a small way there is a couple more TH400s as well, but 4spd 4L80E versions in the Suburbans! If you ever get to see the remote Aussie 4spd shifters in the 4cyl LHs they are wierd setups.

Just a follow up. The reason I ruled out special vehicle packages from question 3 is as youll see there was WAY too many. Here is HQ alone:

Belmont: 6cyl ute, V8 ute, 6cyl van, V8 van (all XX7) plus V8 sedan (SS).
Kingswood 6cyl ute, V8 ute (both XX7) plus V8 sedan (GTS 4 door - XV4).

Plus all the Commodore special packages.

Dr Terry, BT1 in HZ. What engine and box did these run as standard? Was it 308 auto?

AFAIK the HZ BT1 had a 4.2 V8 as standard.
