Can anyone think of a good reason why a July 1974 built Acacia Ridge HQ would have hanging front seat belts and not retractable ones?

Its got the long centre consule and the rear ash tray is blanked off because of the electric windows option, so I'm guessing the consule is the original one.

When did the retractable type come into being? . . and was it different for each state?

It depends on the model, GTS are optional, Premier are standard.

I'm pretty sure front retractables (option AS8) were optional (or standard as part of a lux level or package eg Premier) on the front of HJ passenger vehicles at HJ release but you couldn't get them on commercials until 1/1/75 when they became standard for all HJ. Funnily enough later in HJ rear retractables (A47) became optional on Belmont sedan only. I used to have a HJ Belmont sedan with retractables that looked factory but I always thought they weren't, but they probably were.

I just expected the retractables would have been installed in a July 74 HQ GTS4. Looks like this car didnt get it though.
