Just wondering, I did a Google search but I can't find anything on it. Whoever it is, they're a genius, and I hope they are still alive because I'd love to meet them.
No worries, mate.

From memory it might have been Leo Pruneau but I might be mistaken.

Good thinking there, but the HQ was manufactured 1971-1974, and Leo didn't begin designing for GM Australia until 1975.
No worries, mate.

Leo started here in 1969 but the HQ was well underway when he got here. Given how close the car is to its US cousins my guess is the basic design was originally designed for the USA as a Pontiac or such and never used, then it was sent here and moulded into the HQ. This explains why the HQ is so different from any Holden before it, and also why it is so different to Torana in its construction. Speculation only.

He finished it, but the origins appear to be US despite all the hype about it being a total Aussie design.

The HQ is by far the best looking 4-door bar none, sleek, shark-like 70's muscle-car awesomeness. Full stop. Well the HJ-X-Z are close.
Motor on now and reject ovals.

HQ, XB, VH all awsome looking 4 doors. Aussie Stylists got it right in the early to mid 70's. Then came the P76 to rival them. Oh well...
