Their was xv2 and xv4,was their any other xv options. You would have thought xv6 would have been the 350 not xw8

Depends on what models you're talking about, as codes can mean different things on different models, and there's a stack of them. Codes are also assigned as groups - with the first letter denoting the family it belongs to eg L = engines, M = trans, G = axle, F = suspension etc.
X is generally used for marketing & special packs, which could bring only a few dress up options onto an otherwise standard car, like on a Vacationer, or it could be a whole lot more - including a mechanical package, like on an SS (XV2). |

The "rule" I described only applies for the first letter of the pack.
Sometimes it's only loosely into groups (eg A9Y is a VL Calais wagon, on a Berlina base, but another option pack - the Vacationer was known as XW4 in most commodores, but also known as A9A in the 3rd vacationer run during VH, and XY8 in VK). So Xs & As can overlap somewhat, as both groups tend to cover "dress up" options, as well as performance options, and marketing packs as well.
The actual 2nd & 3rd digits don't really mean anything concrete - there's a partial pattern if you consider the U in XU1, XU2, etc (which HSV latched onto with the XU6) but not all XU* are hotter engine/performance packs. Sometimes you can see where a series of them were released sequentially like all the U4* and U5* numbers during VK, listing all the paint colours, and trim colours. However some are all over the shop - consider all the L numbers denoting engines in VK - L14, LL9, L31, LV2 etc.
So what I'm getting at, is you can't really break the codes down into separate digits to follow a pattern/type of pack - only that the first letter denotes what "family" the option tends to belong to, but even some of them aren't 100% concrete. |

XV4 for a GTS sedan makes sense, and you optioned a 308 if you wanted one. Same as a HQ XX7 package (which was applied across 6 x models whereas XV4 was only on V8 Kingswood sedan) came standard with 173 or 253 and you optioned a 202 or a 308. |

Wouldn't it been easier to have called the HQ80469 a 80869 and the 350 a 81869 then they would have been Monaro's instead of kingswoods with Monaro options

The reason GMH did it as that was how they did almost all the performance product. XU1, L34, Sandman, HQ GTS sedan, HQ GTS350 sedan and A9X were all special vehicle packages on lesser models. |

As Byron said, all other performance cars were an option pack. Even the original GTS 327 was to be 80737 with option L34. The GTS 327 and GTS 350 were the only top line performance vehicles given a unique model code. (although 69 Brabham were given a code and 67/8 were not)
So the question should be, why these two were different not why the others are not the same.
The SSV does get a unique identifier but this is the first SS Commodore to do so.

The GTS327 was done how it was to hide it from GM Corporate, and I guess GTS350 followed suit. |

It was only at the last minute that the name and model number changed. In fact by calling it a GTS 327 was bringing the car under more spotlight than simply offereing a larger engine in an existing model, which was quite common in the GM world at the time.

...also Warren .. by all accounts the GTS 327/350 coupe was never referred to as a "Monaro" so the new moniker was for a very specific high performance Holden.....

As far as I understand it, its the other way around Warren, making it a separate model hid it, having an optional engine would have stood out because that is how GM did it normally. |

Firstly, I beg to differ on the Monaro GTS 327 only being referred to as a GTS 327, all documentation I have has 81837 Monaro GTS 327.
As an engine option I doubt GM parent would really worry about Holden offering a 250BHP 327 engine in a medium sized car. After all this was a very low performance engine, had they wanted to fit a 275BHP, 300BHP, 325BHP or 350BHP, may have brough a bit more atention.
Also GM head office was not against building muscle cars for others to race, look at how many high performance GM cars were built in 1968, the GTS 327 does not even hold a candle to most of them.
It is very interesting that EH S4, HD and HR X2 and 67 HB Brabham are all options, 1968 comes along and the GTS 327 becomes a seperate model, as does the Brabham, then in 1970 the GTR XU1 goes back to being an option not a model, this continues all the way to VE.
Someone had an idea in 1968 that was soon shelved.

Hi Warren thanks for the "Monaro" clarification for the HK GTS 327...
...could the RAC rated HP on our earliest muscle cars, (but more importantly) combined with the duty on imported content possibly have had some consequence on the naming of a new model within the corporate empire?
