Hi,
I was wondering if anybody could help me. I have a Vt commodore when Im driving along the ABS,TRACTION CONTROL, ENGINE, AIR BAG and OIL PRESSURE warning lights come on. They will some times stay on or go on and off while I'm driving. When they are on the air con doesn't work. Can any body tell me what may be causing this and how much its going to cost me to fix.

The problem is your ABS module. disconect the harness going to the ABS module and all the lights except the ABS light will go out. This will tell u if this is the problem. They are easy to to install. The best place to buy them is bursons they have a change over unit. There was a person in this forum that sells them as well. So maybe go back through the buy swap and sell forums and look. I think they are around $350 trade price to me from memory. Thanks luke

My air bag and seat belt pre-pensioner warning light is on due to pulling out the passenger seat and disconnecting the plug to put an amp in.

Im aware that you can pay Holden or and auto electrician $50 to plug in there computer and press a button which I think is highway robbery.

I have heard that you can do it your self by jumping (connecting) two of the pins on the computer?

Does any one know if this works and if so which two pins?

Cheers Cliffy

Hi Guys.

Cliffy said :- "Im aware that you can pay Holden or and auto electrician $50 to plug in there computer and press a button which I think is highway robbery."

Considering the cost of emploing technicians, then paying their superannuation, worker comp insurance, holidays and sick days on top of that, add in rent (or mortgage) then add the cost of a scanner ($5,000 to $6,000 basic) the $50 cost is cheap. Also remember its not $50, its $45.45 plus GST, so out of $50, the guy who has to pay all the bills gets about $5.

All fair points which I agree with.

However I am a student struggling to pay the rent, buy basic groceries and put LPG in the Commodore so $50 is way out of the bugged.

Im happy to leave the warning light on as I dont have the money to get it turned off. But I thought if there is a way I can do it myself I would give it a go.

If anyone can give me any information it would be much appreciated

Cheers Cliffy

had same problem on a VX Clubsport R8......got a Reco ABS Module fitted at Borgys Motor Spares in Sunshine VIC 03 9312 3333...cost $280 and they fitted it while I waited...they kept my old one to send to QLD for reconditioning. Holden quoted $700 for a new ABS module fitted.

Hi Dr it seems I have the same problem abs module as the other guys can you advise me as to the best path to fix it.
I live in Brisbane and gmh are asking $ 700.00 ++++++++++++ and the prices bandied about on this web site are significantly less
Please quote me on supply and freight and can a rookie install it easily. I have a suspicion that the brakes may have to be bled or that a furfy.
Eagerly waiting on your reply so I can get to the bottom of this.

^^While your last line annoys me, I will choose to answer your post.

It may be advertising, but it is a lot more informative if you actually read the thread properly, and researched this very common issue.

I know people who have been stung by so-called mechanics that will tell you the same job is over $1000 because it is an "ABS module fault" - but they con the customer into beleiving that they need an entire ABS unit, not just the electrics.

So a few hundred dollars for the correct bit that will fix it, versus over $1000.

I would hazard a guess that saving $700 odd dollars is somewhat informative??

And as to fixing it yourself, I would encourage you to try it if you can read schematics, perform diagnostic testing at PCB component level, replace those diagnosed faulty components on the circuit board, oh, and the best bit - alumininm weld the links in a confined space, with not only no room for error, but without ANY spatter getting where it can cause damage.

Wanna give it a go?

I might add in the fact that these "advertised" units come with a 2 year warranty..........

And heres my story.
Ignition module on a VS 5L. I thought it could be repaired easily. Try sourcing the transistor! The one that Bosch use has twice the current capacity of anything on the replacement parts market that will fit in the hole. You can get equivalents though - if you want to buy a bulk lot....

I re-soldered all the suspect joints, and it seemed to fix it.

That was until the missus got stuck down the local shops when it wouldnt fire & had no spark.

Suddenly the cost of a 2 year warranty remanufactured unit was looking very good indeed.
Somewhat cheaper than the cost of the tow truck plus the money she just had to spend on new shoes whilst waiting for the towie...

Maybe you might think about the bigger picture now?

Cheers,

Mick

Youre on the money, you dont need to remove the whole unit, nor bleed the brakes.

Its simply a matter of swapping the electronic module over, and then getting it reset to clear the fault code.

That is correct. If the light goes out then it has cleared the fault itself.

Sometimes they stay on & need a boot from the scan tool to reset.
