Kimba

This one sounds a bit strange. The BCM can effect cooling fan operation, but I think a little more testing & diagnosis might be required first.

This one sounds like a faulty ABS unit. Simply unplug the ABS module & take it for a spin around the block. If everything else returns to normal & only the ABS & Trac-off light remain, then it's a good bet that it's the module at fault.

Dr Terry.

Hi guys. Just to keep updating here on my discoveries.
The last time the ABS and TRAC OFF came on was after the car had wamred up and i pulled out of my driveway. Turned the car to left almost full lock. As the front tyres came down the (angled)gutter the lights came on.
Was bugging me so took car to where i could do some testing (bit of loose gravel dirt etc)
****Lights had gone off on way to testing grounds****
1.Brake on firm "TRAC OFF" foot on throttle - wheels spin no probs

2.Brake on firm "TRAC ON" foot on throttle - wheels begin spin throttle relaxer kicks in TRAC OFF & ABS lights on

3.Car up to 20Km/Hr attempt to lock up ABS engages TRAC OFF & ABS lights go off.

4. Try Brake on firm "TRAC ON" foot on throttle - wheels begin spin throttle relaxer kicks in and nothing.

5. Try Brake on firm "TRAC OFF" foot on throttle - wheels spin no probs

Since this the problem hasn't reared it's head??????
Will keep looking into this and taking notes IF it comes back.
Maybe when i got my brakes done they left some air in the lines????

Hi Dr Terry
I too have had similar problems. VX Berlina V8 auto. Mine started with the Air Bag light coming on every time I got in the car, plus 3 annoying beeps. After about 4 weeks the ABS, trac cont, oil two little crosses started coming on as well and no air. So found this very informative thread. Disconnected the ABS module. Air Bag, ABS, trac control stays on but also the low traction light appears. Oil light and the two crosses go away and air works (really need that at the moment!) What worries me is the air bag light doesnt go off. Is this still in all possibility the module at fault? Cheers and thanks.

Gents the ABS light and "TRAC OFF" has only come up once after i put on the A/C.
With the car running a 25% under drive kit i think that watching the battery level in traffic city driving maybe it could have something to do with this. Funny thing is though as soon as i turn off A/C turn off restart it hasn't come back.
Could there be a link with either battery problem or cooling fan???

Hi all,

I was on this forum a couple of years ago,and it helped me diagnose a faulty ABS module on my series 2 Calais back then, which I replaced and have had no similar problems since, until a week ago.

Was away on holiday and went to move the car one day and the steering went heavy.Turned it off and back on and all was good again.
Thought of the ABS module because this was a symtom last time.
Was OK until last week coming home from work the steering felt heavy on centre but light as when just off centre in either direction,( bit scarey at 80kph).
Now it is heavy all the time.
I have checked the wiring and disconnected the ABS module to rule that out and tried resetting the BCM, seemed to have plenty of hydralic pressure,so i at a loss as to what the problem is.
Could it be the actual solinoid or what ever is on the actual steering rack?
Hoping someone has some ideas.
Thanks in advance
Phil

Hi phil.

It doesn't sound like it's a faulty ABS module because you have no dash indictor lights on, or any other faults with the car.

My guess is the the variatronic valve in the steering rack has failed & that system no longer functions correctly.

The valve incorporates a plastic piston seal, which becomes brittle with age & mileage. It then breaks up & travels thru the power steer system to cause further havoc. The bits can get caught up in the pump control valve & the variatronic solenoid.

As many on the forum know, I've been repairing power steering systems for over 30 years & from my experience it is easier & cheaper in the long run to replace both rack & pump with reco/exchange units & have the system thoroughly flushed. Get a pro to properly diagnose it first.

Well I sent my ABS module off to the fellow on Ebay. Prompt as it came back in a week and all seems good. Air bag light keeps coming on though, but I assume from some of the posts here that the ECU needs resetting. Will get that looked at next time I have to take it near a dealer. Thanks for the informative forum.

Thanks Dr Terry,

That sounds like the most probable cause of my problems unfortunately.
I'll take it to a steering specialist, and get it checked out.
Any idea on a rough cost?

Thanks again

PS Is there any chance of the system failing altogether? The car is fine to drive once moving ,just a bit heavy at parking speeds.

The cost will vary greatly depending on who does the job & what their labour rates & margins are. In my shop (in Sydney) it would be around $700 to $750 including parts, labour & GST, for a variatronic rack & pump fitted, a little more for a V8.

It won't fail totally, but if any debris gets caught in the pump control valve, you will lose all assistance & it will become very heavy, just as if the motor had stalled. You can still drive it home, but your biceps will get a good workout. I would get it looked at sooner rather than later.

Dr Terry,
Took the old girl( not the missus) in for a check up after work today and got it checked out. Guy told me seems like it's still got power steering working but not as a Calias but like a standard VS/VT only a bit nastier !!.
Said the same as you told me here and said to replace rack, pump and flush the system, plus wheel alingment etc. All up including fitting $950.
Company ( Re-Car in Adelaide)has been around for over 20 years, so I guess they must be reputable or they wouldn't be still in business.

Looks like she'll be going in this week.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Regards
Phil

have vx commodore, now has new alternator after having one rebuilt in december(local mechanic told us a new one not available). Now we have the christmas tree effect happening and belive this to be the abs module. I understand this is best a replace part not a repair job. My main concern is can this computer module have been affected by the irregular voltage from the regulator? Judging from the headlights I believe voltage swung from low to high quite a few times before the mechanic would believe there was an issue. Then the same day the alternator was replaced we got the christmas tree on the dash and a burning smell coming thru the air vents.
The other commodores that have abs module probs have any of them just had regulator issues?

Hello all ,this it my first post so please be gentle .Ive has a look on the forums here but can't seem to find the answer i am looking for I'm also having probs with my ABS light coming on . It comes on randomly when i start the car ,if i turn it off then on again the light will go off.It mainly comes on in hot weather and is the only light that comes on ( as opposed to some posts that i have read where various dash lights are also displayed ) I have unplugged the abs connection at the module and cleaned the terminals to no avail.Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to what it might be before i start spending money on replacing parts that may not need replacing . Thanks in advance Dayvo

Here is a question that may puzzle you, as I am puzzled.
I have a 1998 VT Series 1 Berlina, I have just replaced my engine with a Series 2 Ecotec from a VS (the original engine was a Series 2)

My oil pressure warning sensor is not hooked up (the wire has been broken since well before i brought the car)

The oil warning light has started to come on at random times, the oil level is fine, there appers to be plenty of pressure getting to the top of the engine, and the oil and filter is less than 1000km old.

My question to you is..... How do i stop the light coming on? the bell that comes with it is driving me insane!

Thanks in advance
Shannon
