Hi guys, this is an old thread but it helped me figure my car out. Trac off light went on when headlights or running lights were used. Then couldnt manually turn trac on / off, and cruise control didn't work. Changed out rear tail lights from LED to OEM, and problem gone! |

Hi guys, I have similar problem, all warming lights come on, then I lose the instrument cluster, started with airbag light, then all, then car cuts out, after last time it wont start but I think that's because the battery is down on power ( new battery, so I was thinking the Alternator is buggered) here's the thing though, My VT does not have ABS or Traction control installed. is this likely to be the alternator wiring?
Also, lately its been using double the fuel it should, replaced the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs and HT leads, still uses 1/4 of a tank to do 40Km's, is this likely to be the injectors?

The CAN-bus system is what causes the errors, and it is very voltage sensitive.
Put a known good battery into it, and measure the voltage.
Then start the car, and measure the voltage again.
If it's not over 12V when idling (and over 13.5V when revving it to 1500rpm) then the alternator is cactus.
Usually it's the regulator that's the problem (also contains the brushes). It's a plastic box, with a plug-in loom (2 wires) going into it, and it's held onto the back of the alternator by 2 screws.
You can buy a replacement from any good car parts shop for about $50-60. Make sure you disconnect the battery before attempting to replace it.
The fuel issue will either be because of the low voltage, or the oxygen sensors are stuffed (Oxy sensors another common issue with these). It could also be the fuel pressure reg jamming up (increasing fuel pressure) but this would be noticeable at idle, and you'd have a lot of black smoke at low-loads.
I'd give Bebco a call on 02 9644 2888 to source any replacement sensors for these engines - you'll get the right parts first time, and he can courier them all over Oz. |
