I'm now considering buying an NC Fairlane V8 from a good friend of mine for a trip to Ayer's Rock next month. What should I look for and where do they fail?
This one has 189,000km on it, is completely standard and is visually perfect. Full service history as well.
It has recently had all door locks replaced and the self-levelling rear suspension sorted.

Thanks for the offer buddy, but the one I'm looking at is at the end of my street, in the ACT. Sounds like a trusty machine though. What would you look out for in this model?

If the plastic radiator is more than a couple of years old I'd replace it & the hoses before attempting a long trip. How much are they asking for this beautiful beast? Edited by user Thursday, 16 June 2005 9:25:30 PM(UTC)

$4k Far too good a deal to pass up methinks. I was looking for a VN Commodore (dont shoot) for the trip, but I think this is worth sacrificing 1 litre/100km extra. Has a 10km higher top speed too (a fundamental consideration for this journey). Not to me

OK gave her the big inspection today and I've discovered two issues.
The water pump seems to be leaking coolant. The body and lower radiatior hose are covered in dry and moist coolant. Is this likely to be just the gasket or do they leak from the fron

One more thing, while testing out the non-ABS brakes (in the wet), the front left would lock alot earlier than the right. There was no pull on the steering wheel prior to lockup. I was thinking that given there was not pull on the steering wheel, this was

Ok for a waterpump it should be no harder than any other V8 but there is one gotcha. The later (EFI) type windsors have a waterpump that turns in the opposite direction than the earlier 1970's 302 Windsors. Put the wrong one on & you are guaranteed overhe Edited by user Tuesday, 21 June 2005 12:55:36 AM(UTC)

I had a look at the alternator last night and the only branding I could find was MOTORCRAFT embossed on the rear of the body. Does this tell us which one it is?
How do they differ in their repairability?

Re the brakes yes I would firstly for safety & secondly because I am having to change pads twice as often as I should not to mention uneven wear on my new rotors. Easy way to tell the difference between the Bosch & Mitsubishi Alternators is that th Edited by user Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:35:36 PM(UTC)

Thanks Jim.
I'd say its the Mitsubishi alternator then.
What would be required to fix the brakes if it is the same problem as yours? Im hoping you're not going to say new calipers.

Well new calipers might be on the cards but I doubt it (mine) needs no more than just new slide pins & bushes. I am going to talk to Australian Brake Sleeving in QBN about them when I get time to stop off there on my way home from work one day.

Well all went well until she had a starter motor failure at Ayers Rock. 3 days and $370 later, we were on the road again. It did decide to rain though for the majority of our 3 days stranded at Ayers Rock Campground.
