Hi guys,

I've been involved pretty much with hi-po Japanese cars most of my motoring life (I'm 30 now), my last car was a 1988 Toyota GZ20 Soarer with a 1JZ-GTE engine swap.

Anyway, just recently I swapped my 2002 Yahaha 100cc Scooter for my mates 1966 HR Special sedan. The only mods on it are..

VH Commodore bucket seats
13" Cheviot mag wheels
2.5" exhaust with a single straight thru muffler
202 red motor
Trimatic box
Copious amounts of rust =P

I haven't got any pics up yet but I shall have some up as I start to do the old girl up.
My main goal is to not restore it but to turn it into a sort of RatRod. It'll basically be painted matt black, lowered as far as it can go and have widened pursuit rims fitted with maybe hubcaps in the centre or mini moondisks. There's lots of other stuff that'll be done but that's the main idea.

I don't know if anyone can tell me but my HR comes with 3 flutes on the front fenders, like GTS's, etc. All the old guys I talk to don't recall the HR coming with flutes, are these a rare thing on HR's? They aren't aftermarket as they are pressed not welded in.

Those flutes only came out factory on HJ-HZ mate.

WANTED: HJ Sandman parts, PM me!
WANTED: GTS rims, seats and mirrors to suit HJ.

They dont appear to be welded in though, just pressed.
If they arent factory as you say, who ever did it did a good job at it.

Nope, the flutes are welded in.
With that amount of rust, Id be pulling up the carpets and checking out the condition of the floor pan.
Also, remove the dogleg stone guards, and see what horrors are hiding there.

Yea, Ive got the use of my works factory space this weekend to work on the HR as its been pouring here in Perth since last week and its set to continue till Sunday.
So Ill be removing all the chrome bits actually to see what lurks behind them all.
The interior Ill be gutting as I want to investigate the floor pan as you suggested but I also want to paint the interior metal with red oxide paint that we have at work to prevent further rust issues.
Theres some rust behind the fenders so well be taking them off to get to it so at the same time I can check behind the fenders to check for weld marks on the flutes.

they could very well be pressed, but they were definitely not factory.
They could be a repro version of the original guard with a bit of jazz
Some people have made repro HQ - Z guards with the flutes pressed in.

Well the flutes are welded in.

Been cutting most of the rust out on the weekend. Theres a ton of bog in the HR, at some points its cms thick.
I think someones restored it in the past but moisture has gotten behind some of the bog.
Most of the heavy rust is in the front fenders beneath the flutes were dirt/mud has collected.

Doglegs werent too bad, just surface rust on each one, mostly at the bottom.

Havent pulled the carpets yet...

Yea, my dad told me once that the old Holdens were made into the bare shell and stored outside where they started to rust. When it came to assembly they were sand blasted and then painted.
Not sure how true that is but it would explain why they started to rust quite fast.

Ive got plenty of flat sheet metal that I scored from work anyway to turn into new floor pans if it needs it.

My fiances uncle has a HQ wagon with a 308 in it running on gas that hes going to wreck, runs fine just unlicenced with a rusty tailgate.
Going to see if I can score it for cheap as I can use a lot of the gear in it for the HR, namely the disk brakes. The 308 would come in handy too =)

Just a rear shot of the HR from the weekend. All four sides look like this at the moment but theres still lots more to do.



Not sure if I want to keep the front and rear over-riders.
