looking for plastic chrome?
gday to all you punters out there, and car enthusiests!!
my name is jeff, and i wanna let all the car restorers out there, know what i do, and what service i can provide for your resto project. Can re-chrome your plastic dash cluster for all the early holden/ford, american, vintage, rod, custom, Stick some genuine chrome on there, bring back the "shine". Plastic carcass repairs, to broken parts, gt ford dash re-chrome, . Now, for die-cast steel, eg; bonnet birds, taillight surrounds, indicator surrounds, badges,fender trim etc, we can repair "most" corrorsion defects.I can provide an "extensive metal polishing", and "conventional chrome plating service", as well. before you get any plastic parts chromed I would suggest you talk to an experienced plater. There are myriad problems caused by chrome plating on plastic, not least of which is the high amount of build that results from getting it to throw evenly. Resulting in parts that dont fit and loss of detail. Once its done the plastic is ruined as you need to dip it in nitric to strip, and that removes the plasticizers... Do your research.

plater is right to a certain degree, with what he is saying.
As a Toolmaker in the Plastics Injection Moulding industry many years ago, I can add a little piece of info in regards to ABS Plastics as used by many car manufacturers.
All ABS Plastics for Chrome plating use a crosslink additive in the material, plasticizers are not usually added to ABS, as its a very stable co-polymer at moulding temperature. The crosslink additive allows the chromium plating to have something to bond to as the electroplating process is been applied. If you like - the ABS is semi magnetic with this additive. As for researching this subject, this sort of stuff used to be pretty much secret, as the suppliers of plastics raw materials were always very secretive about just what went into their materials, especially when in the 70s many car manufacturers started using more and more plastics in vehicles. It was a very lucrative market back then.

Gday champ, any chance you can do HK Premier taillights? Mine are quite pitted and was wondering if this pitting can be filled before rechroming.

i had the taillights on my ht rechromed by a bloke out tingalpa - wynnum way. told me i am the best and he charged like it. 1600.00 to do 2 bars 2 door handles and 2 tail lights. bars are spotty unless you polish them all the time.1 door handle the chrome fell off the button after 2 days of use,tail lights are a horrible pitted mess . after i put the car together and had the dramas i drove the car there only to be told thats not my work. i said your joking. he said where is your reciept. i said you told me cash before the job was done. RIPPED OFF. so if you want quality work dont have it done out that way by a old bloke who says he is the best because he is a low down DOG. kel.rant over.only good thing is a lot of people see my car at shows and cruises and i tell every one of them where not to go.

I have a 98 LTD grill that is perfect apart from some deep scratches in the most obvious place,any-one know if the area could be repaired or would the whole grill need to be done? Or chuck it and try to find a good somewhere..

some of you have shown some concerns with hard chrome on plastic parts and with good reason. There are a few problems with this process such as painting the sections required. A general rule paint will not stick to chrome even with an etch primer. It may look like it does but it will scratch or rub off. The other main problem is the expansion and contraction rates of plastic vs chrome which over a period of time usally not that long can cause seperation chrome pealing off. The correct way to restore these parts is to metalize them, a special process which avoids all these problems and adds life. The most important thing to remember all car manufactures used this process so if you want it restored to original specs and you want it done correctly you should metalize it.

vacuum metalizing is the correct term isnt it dash man??

and i believe you only get 1 or 2 attempts at it? if you keep trying it after the first attempt, doesnt it get worse after you strip it off again if you are not happy with it the first time?

Yes Vacuum Metallising is the correct term . Not many people do it anymore . Mark Goode is the man to see i am told . Does an awesome job of the GT dashes etc which i have seen at the GT shops when we go there and drop stuff off. He will organise the job from Start to finish i believe and get the Metallising done at one of the last decent places that do it . With the Metallising you also dont get the build up or loss of definition like the hard chrome . Its a bit like 2 Pac is durable in certain aspects and does not need the maintenence of Acrylic , but for old cars you cant beat a glassy Acyrlic job even though it does have its issues . They are all dying arts that most have forgotten about and because they require intense labour . If you dont use the traditional techniques to restore your car it will just never look quite right .

plastic metalizing can be re-done as many times as you wish. It has no effect on the plastic thats the beauty of it. Hard chrome is rough on the plastic and can cause damage and is very difficult to remove when done. Once again best do it they way the factory did it if you want it to original specs.

i can back up kelvin,s claims of bad crhome work by the old guy in wynumm, charges a lot.
i had some 327 rocker covers done, they fell apart pretty quick, wont be using him for other stuff.

I know most of the discussions on this thread are old but just wanted to throw into the mix that we can provide very good plastic chrome plating services. Someone mentioned these sorts of restorations are dying art forms. We agree and is why we have invested alot of time and effort into developing processes like plastic and non metal chrome plating that will still be needed well into the future. Our website has plenty of info about various chrome plating and other options if youre interested.
