Hey guys just to add to this I have found on another site an extract for the HR steering box explaining the adjustment involving taking off the pitman arm and using a guage on the steering wheel. Is it necessary to go to this length to adjust it/is the HR box even the same method as the WB power box anyway?

No to both questions. The adjustment method is different for the HR vs the Bendix Bishop variable ratio power steering box.

These boxes do not normally need adjustment in the car. If you have play, the box will need re-bushing. As mentioned earlier its easier, quicker, safer & often cheaper in the long run to just get an exchange box that has been properly overhauled.

When we overhaul these boxes, we replace the bronze bushes with needle rollers & properly shim the pitman arm. After that they drive better than new.

I am at a loss why you would change to power steering in the first place....
superior feel on the open road with manuel steering.

If its a HQ they can be a pig to park in tight spots with no power steer. It makes a great upper body workout. So if you park a lot, power steer is the go. But on the open road with no power steer - yeah brilliant, great road feel....

you can only adjust the steering box play a cetain amaount before it seizes or becomes too tight, it pays to check that the slack is not in the idler arm, the wheel bearings or the tie rod ends first.
also free play of up to 2 " at the steering wheel is acceptable.

This myth of power steering providing less feel on the open road is just that, a myth !!

Old style power steer systems like the ram & valve systems as seen on HK/T/G & Fords pre-XA, are slow, vague & over-assisted. They dont provide much feel & have too many turns lock-to-lock.

The Bendix-Bishop power steering box as seen in HQ-WB & Fords XA-XH are variable ratio. They have less turns lock-to-lock than their manual steer counterparts & are very direct in the straight ahead position. Most problems occur when they are not set up properly by an experienced wheel aligner.

When these cars were new, many came from the factory with cross-ply tyres. When they are fitted with decent radial tyres the alignment figures have to be adjusted accordingly. Ive if you run more positive caster they drive like a late Commodore.

I own 2 HQs, one is a V8 Kingswood & the other is a 6-cyl Premier, both with power steering. Ive set them up to give virtually the same road feel as my WB DeVille. On the open road they are very stable with great road feel.

Jump into a low mileage WB Statesman tell me it has bad open road feel.

johnperth, in NSW 2" free-play at the steering wheel wheel will fail a roadworthy inspection. Im not familiar with the rules in other states.

Dr Terry,Ive got a WB statesman and have to agree,it is sensational to drive.So much in fact that Im putting the exact same drive-train AND pwr steering out of a WB statesman in my HQ panelvan.The same engine and trans (308+t400)but the engine and trans are tweaked up a bit more, but the steering in the statesman convinced me to put it in the van,but like you said they dont lack any feel at all.

terry 2" didnt bother the road testers here, but they did pick other stupid stuff, like making me weld the tonner body to the chassis, which I had to take to higher authority to get overturned..
Also there is a bit of spring" to allow for.
I am having a clean out and have discovered a ram assisted system, I suspect it is Ford, so it is possibly XW/XY then is it? I did not realise they had that system.

Hi again fellas well this question is a bit off topic but I have a power steering setup to install in my ht. it is complete but for the pitman arm. Now 1st question is is it possible for a backyard mechanic to rebuild the ram/valve and where would I even look for the parts? 2nd is does anyone even do these anymore/what would someone likely charge? 3rd it doesn't have a pitman arm does anyone know of they are different to non power steer? Finally I was thinking of just using a commodore power steer pump - does anyone know off they run at the same pressure? Thanks for putting up with my questions!!!! Cheers

Just in addition To my prior post I adjusted my wheel alignment with an iPhone app and it worked remarkably well. I added plenty of shims for -ve camber and positive castor and it handles like a dream. Except the steering effort!!!

I would have thought the iPhone would be a bit soft to use as a shim. Expensive too.

I thought the phone alignement was a wind up. It ain't. Since I'm about to do a disc conversion & suspension work on the Skylark, I'm going to give it a go.
At least it will (hopefully) get it steering well enough to get to my mates tyre store for a real alignment.
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right.

Yes Jim, I was being a bit silly. I still think iPhones are good as shims and not not much else, but that's another story.
Chris, I'll be interested to see how close you get it. I assume it uses the internal attitude sensor, which is renowned as a a fairly inaccurate device. Are you supposed to calibrate it on a level surface first, and have the car level as well? We used to do castor and camber with spirit levels on F5000 cars, but I can't see how it can help with setting toe.

I'll be trying it over the weekend. New tall ball joints & offset upper shafts are in.Time to get the shims happening.

For toe in? String & a tape measure. I remember the camber/castor gauge- we used to use it on Chev C 10s that were too big to get on the wheel aligner. The good old Hunter Lite-a-line.

Used to get great results from it. Unless the sun was low in the sky. Made it hard to read.
