Finally managed to get some paint on the ol girl. Ended up with 4 base coats and around 6 clear coats. Then lots and lots and lots of wet sanding with 1500/2000 wet n dry before buffing and polishing. Starting to put some bits back on now but still a long way to go. I will post some up to date photos this weekend for you all.

Thanks for the comments guys. Its been a labour of love so to speak and ill be glad when it all legal to drive. Im just finishing some small bits off and should be over the pits in the next couple of weeks. If all goes well then it should pass first time. Just got the bumpers bach from being re-chromed and the guys in Perth did a top job (although for $800 it should be).Cant wait to drive it. Ill post some more photos once I get all the rego and stuff out the way and go somewhere with a bit better backdrop. Rough cost so far is around the $16-18,000 mark.
Sandman, The exhaust is only 2 1/4" with 2 1/2" chrome tips. I sourced the tailpipes and mufflers from an exhaust place in Perth and grabbed a heap of bends etc so I could build the intermediate pipes. The whole system is fully welded and there is a balance pipe fitted up the front. Sound quite nice....

All complete now except for some new seat belts and maybe a GTS or SAAS steering wheel. New Pioneer head unit fitted, 6x9 rear speakers in custom boxes and 10" sub with amp. Fits nicely into rear shelf that was cut in the build up. Central locking, Power windows and alarm/immobiliser all wired up and working. Had to replace the front disk rotors as the brake pedal was pulsating when used, problem fixed. Will be looking for some new seats once rego is out of the way. (what are my otions here, will commodore seats bolt straight in????) Will have to get a new rear glass at some stage as this one has far too may water marks and scratches that cant be removed. Apart from that, I have done a couple of test drives around town and seems to drive real nice. everyting works and exhaust has a nice note to it. Transmission changes are smooth and brakes work a treat. Its off to the rego dept on Monday, so fingers crossed it will be all legal by the afternoon. Will post some more pics when I get a chance.

Sandman, how did the new exhaust turn out. Did you go for single or dual muffler setup. Balance pipe or not.?????

just compared your tailgate hinges they are different to mine , wonder why ??, mine stick out more than yours ..

Yep youre right, Dont know why as I thought they were all the same. I do have an aftermarket tailgate but I wouldnt think thatd make a difference.
Good news this end.... The ute passed the pits first time. Only thing questioned was the engine mount bolts not being quite long enough. I have since changed them from 3" to 3 1/2" so now the nylocks actually have thread showing. I will take her for a maiden spin this weekend at last.
Now what shall I do for the next project....????????

Took the ol girl out for some cruise time around town.(sorry did not have video camera to record for you) More than happy with the way she runs. Engine power is good and transmission is smooth. Diff has minor backlash that is mainly evident when going from D to R (not to concerned at this stage). Brakes work a treat and overall driveability is spot on. Cooling system works fine. No wierd noises or suprises.
I am considering putting a tonneau cover on but after removing all the clips and filling the holes during the rebuild, the standard one with the rope or bunjee is not an option. I would like to get one that is flush mount and uses pin type mounts. Can anyone point me in the right direction here as to where I can buy one and is there any real knack or pitfalls when fitting. Or do I have to get one custom made. I did consider a hardtop utelid but with the cost....... ouch.

hey nice lookin ute! im hopefully picking an old HZ friday, thinking about putting a 350 or a 308 in it. (depending on the cost) Anyone have any recomendations as to where to find a decent one ? Cheers, ben

Hey Trev did you say back there somewhere that youre having a go at painting yourself and you havent really done it before?? If so youve done an awesome job. it looks fantastic. Gives curious backyard painters like me hope!

Thanks for the comments on the job. Yep you are correct, I did do the whole job myself and Im not a panel beater or spray painter. This was my first attempt at this sort of thing and from the comments I get, it seems to have turned out alright. Its amazing how when people ask "who painted it for you", they are surprised when I tell them I did it myself in a backyard shed with no prior experience. I would say to anyone who is contemplating this, to spend many hours on the net surfing for information, have lots and lots of patience and be prepared for setbacks. Persistance is the key and if at the end of the day, it passes the 20ft test then well done. I am more than happy with the way it turned out.
Would I do it again....... well........
