Hi there

Have recently acquired an HJ Monaro running a 350 chev with T400 box.

Nose clip has been changed from single to twin headlight with Torana style front spoiler.

Bodywork / paint rough but serviceable. A few small rust spots which I will attack as I can.

I have managed to obtain the original style front spoiler so will see how fitting that goes.

Also have an induction scoop to fit to give me room to put 3" filter, spacer on carb. Will also see how it helps with keeping cool in traffic (can only be better letting hot air out, eh?)

The induction scoop should also give me the room to fit the wee nitrous kit under carby.....;)

Will fire photos up as I go (when I figure it all out)

I have just completed installing a remote boot release to the HJ, and it was not as tricky or expensive as I thought.

I used a VL commodore boot lock and solenoid ($20 from TradeMe). The boot lock mounting plate neede a slot cut for the release lever, and a hole drilled for the solenoid arm to feed through. Mounted the lock on the other side of the mounting plate to the HJ lock (so that the key lined up still). Solenoid mounted at the edge of one of the holes in the strengthening beam. For the grand total of 1 slot, three holes and a length of wire and a switch, I can now open the boot from the dash.








Hopefully, now I will stop locking my plurry keys in the boot. ;)

Front spoiler well under way.

Pulling the spoiler hard against the front, the point at back hung over arch by around 1cm. Re-aim so that new end point would be along same line, and trim a wedge from trailing edge to just behind rounded edge. Left hand spoiler(without the ridge at end) sat a little odd, so shaped to sit around radiator opening.

Was left with around 1/2 cm max gap at front corners, and a minor edging and reshape at rear (along with filling the gap in the middle). Nu-tek the big gaps and prime, just have to skim fill the rough bits and finish sand and paint. But is looking heaps better already. Have stayed with screw fastening for the moment (as will do full repaint eventually).

Front spoiler has been fitted, filled, abused, and painted.

From a reasonable distance, it looks pretty good.



Up close and personal, not too bad either:-



Just dont get much closer than that.

Off to the Shannon Car Show as exhibitor with the Central Districts Coupe and Monaro Club on Sunday, so well see what the other guys think of it.

Next up is Torana style bonnet scoop, then probably repaint the wheels silver, then boot lining (or maybe the seats), then more bodywork.

looks like the last owner tryed to make it more of an hx - hz rather than hj the black on the bonnet hx etc, easy fixed though...

A bit more achieved - and in progress...

Rather than having to turn everything on to operate the radio (and drain battery in heck of a hurry), a switch and couple of diodes have been installed to enable the radio to be powered independantly.

The door cards are all out, rear seat out and wiring for miles as I install central locking and and alarm system into the boot (along with a powered sub). The under-dash area was getting a bit crowded, so I have run a power feed to a splitter in the boot, and am mounting the central locking controller and alarm CPU, shock sensor and other bits in the boot also. I will then just run the required wires for immobiliser and warning light forward and splice in as required.

the central locking has been a bit of a trick, with the stiff old locks unlocking ok on solenoid, but reluctant to lock. I have discovered the springs in the mechanism which are used for the over-centring mechanism and unhooked them, which means that the solenoids can operate the locks, but mean that they tend to lower themselves slightly and end up locking if left alone (or doors slammed shut). I will have to sort that slightly before I am locked out in the real world.

While I have the garage time, I also have the bonnet off to cut a hole in and fit a torana-style induction scoop. Should help with cooling and fitting the K&N filter. (And maybe other toys under carby).

Havent updated for a while, but a few things going on.

Front spoiler met with a stump when towing firewood, so that needs to be remounted.

Engine is out at reconditioners. Disassembling it revealed that it was probably only running on 6. Engine shop found big head cracks in 2 of them. Was going to go 383, but far too expensive to get kits in, so just going 30 over, balanced with torque spec cam and a we burst of giggle juice. Engine to be painted black with silver exhaust, manifol and accessories.

Going to remote mount a starter solenoid (helps with hot starting and preserving battery cables), electric fuel pump with separate regulator and gauge, low mount alternator and Gilmer belt drives with hidden light wiring etc to tidy up engine bay. Inner guards are out, and looks quite awesome, so may run that way. Nolatech seay bar rubbers and steering coupling. Alloy catch cans for radiator overflow and washer bottle attached to radiator support panel.

Bonnet catch panel a bit stuffed as are the bonnet height adjusters. So will replace with one pair locking bonnet pins at corners and one pair stock bonnet pins toward centre.

Battery mounts into boot, with panel across all the bits in there (just where boot floor drops down).

Inside new black carpet, and rod shifter becomes cable operated mega hammer. Not sure if I can keep stock console around it, will have a crack. The switches for fuel pump, kill switch, rear demist and nitrous will go into either stock console in front of arm rest or rear of mega hammer console to tidy up dash.

New carb accelerator cable mount including kickdown mount for cable to TH350 (which it hasnt had before). TH350 getting tidy up and stage 1 shift kit.

Had it running (briefly).

Engine 30 over rebuild, custom cam tidied up heads. Gearbox recon and tighten (but no shift kit). Low mount alternator and gilmer drive belt.

New carpet inside, hammer shifter without console. Electric Fuel pump on frame rail beside remote starter solenoid. Boot mounted battery with cutoff switch (bypass wire with 20amp relay to keep clock etc going).

Fired up, all good. Poured 5 litres of fluid into trans. No movement. Poured another 3 in and away we went. 5 mins up the road gearbox starts slipping. ANother couple of minutes charge light comes on and temperature starts to climb. heading home, big bang and coolant for miles. New pretty overflow bottle hasnt enough venting at top. Fills up, pressurises and explodes bottom tank join. Trns out gilmer drive belts arent untossable after all.

Will remount alternator up top on big lump bracket. Radiator off being fixed (or replaced). Then well have another crack at it.
