Hi All, I thought I would start out this topic to really spark up some learning,as no matter how much you know sometimes you just fall on good ideas.(and bad ones). So Ill start out with a few and see how it goes.tip number 1 ..I used old lenses from a HQ dash for mixing small amounts of body filler before throwing them out, also some cardboard to apply aswell.tip number 2...I bought a cheap compressor and spray gun to prepare the car in primer saveing ALOT of money for the respray hence being able to use the money elsewere, also at the end still have the compressor. tip 3 put up a $20 tarp to keep out of the weather because my garage is full ,keeping the temp down and getting more work done ,also again at the end of this project will still have the tarp.tip 4 read ALL THESE RESPONSES and try them out and one more thing....keep asking if you dont know....cheers ,,ps.. I hope this topic takes off cause I want to know more too....!

i save the lids from spray cans

they are GR8 for putting all the small nuts, screws, bolts washers etc in an orderly fashion. then put them in a drawer or box

just texta the lids as to content ( coz ya just know youll forget !!! )

whilst disassembling your car...

use a digital camera and take plenty of photos as a reference instead of scratching your head trying to put it back together

When looking for a house to buy, or even a long term rental. Insist on one with a decent shed or at least the space to build a decent one... DOH!

I did manage to find one of them, it is so cool. I think she does it for the peace and quiet in the house whilst I am in the shed making a mess and banging knuckles on the car.

Cheers

Use plastic zip bags ie "Glad", GREAT to put parts in as you remove them, even those greasy dirty oily sticky parts you are usually looking for a piece of rag to rap them. With notes, information or instructions etc on a card or piece of paper inside. All sizes available, see through plastic to see contents, water proof, dont take up as much space as other containers, buy in bulk, buy many sizes you will use them etc , also small quantities of paint or samples, or mixtures that need air to dry will last for weeks in a sealed plastic bag ie putty , bog, silicon, mastic, gyprock stopping, and you will find many other uses outside the garage too. ie small components of kids lego, birthday candles, kids chalk, doggie bags from the restruant, Oh! Yes I think you can maybe use them in the kitchen or put the kids lunch or sandwiches in if you like, but go and get your own supply, not the kitchen ones, there wont be enough there now you have a start of the uses AND please let us know what other uses you come up with...... All the best regards ,,Jack.

I know this is pretty obvious and a no-brainer, but if you get the chance and have a few extra dollars, buy a complete cheap car or 2 for spares instead of finding parts. You get all the bits you need and some spares, you can sell the extra decent bits on ebay, and then get rid of the rest of it or the shell on ebay later on. I have scored heaps of good bits doing this and always made the money back i initially spent.

When buying a car always and I mean always choose a better body over bolt on goodies.

If possible only buy a car with original paint, that way your not in for hidden supprises. If I had to choose between a freshly painted car that looks unreal and an old dunger with minimal rust and original paint,Id go for the old dunger everytime(people lie about body condition under that fresh shiney paint)

Mechanicals are easy fixed compared to getting an old body into shape!

For you home mechanics out there do your self a favour and buy a workshop press, they are unreal.Everytime I go to belt something with a hammer I have to stop and see if I can use the press.I use it heaps.

Mines only a 10ton from Supacheap(cost less than $200) and I use it heaps, makes me feel like a PRO!!!

Also learn how to read a wiring diagram(they arnt that hard)and use a multimeter, very handy little devices once you know how to use one!!!

With touch up spray cans for small chips, spray some into the lid and apply with modelling paintbrush. Heaps easier, fills in the chip better and no overspray.

Stripping down the car? Dont forget to clean then tape the screws and washers for each part to the part, that way its all easy to go back in 3 years later and not lost :)

my adice is buy a complete car i started with a bare shell, i collected most of the parts befor i did body work, again factory paint minimal rust over new paint, get the shell sand blasted or soda blasted then buy a welder and make a rotisory so easy to work on for rust repairs even if you use a shop you will get a better job working on something at eye level instead on your back trying to weld.
you can make a engine beter than it left the factory, a body will never be the same smash or rust, so unless it,s a very rusty 81837 worth fixing, buy a good body, just like down at the pub friday night dont have your beer googles on :-)
