money is always the biggest issue in a project, i used "the yeti technique" and it helped heaps
search swap meets and garage sales for parts, and buy bits when you see them cheap not when you have to have them or you will have to pay more to get what you want
if it wasnt for the last minute id get nothing done

Block/cover any "holes" eg end of fuel, brake lines etc, to keep the
hornets from building their nests in em.
When painting cyl heads, plug the ports up..... paint on exhaust valve stems can cause a sticking then burnt valve. So my engine rebuilder claims. Sounds plausable to me.

For hard to reach spots that you cant see, to know where to put your bolt in or out etc, i use my small digital camera, take a photo, have a look and then continue, works great in a dark place too like underneath your vehicle... also, when i work on something, i always put all bolts in to a piece of cardboard or styro foam to keep them in order for re assembly.

when assembling things like carbies and gearboxes that have small springs and ball bearings to fall out and get lost pack them in with axle grease. the grease will dissolve in the petrol or oil and the bits will stay in place.
also keep el cheapo tool kit to loan the cheapskate mates who come around to borrow yours. when they break it they will replace it with good stuff out of embarassment and if they dont replace it you are not much worse off and you know not to lend your tools to them again.

Just found a doozy. When having a 350 chev reconditioned, upon reassembling engine had monster oil leak. After much investigation and cursing pulling apart and putting back together, I discovered a "feature" of the sb chev. On the front of the block beside the fuel pump are tow empty bolt holes. The top one goes through the block into the Fuel Pump pushrod hole (so you can put a bolt through to hold the pushrod in place when removing / replacing fuel pump). When the block comes back from reco, they usually take this bolt out for cleaning. If you dont put a (short) bolt back in the hole, all of the oil falls out. It falls out in such a way as to pretend to be a whole bunch of other leaks.

These bolt holes at the front of a SBC are also used for the engine mounts on early models (55-56-57 etc.). Dr Terry |

when rebuilding a set of old brakes that arent in use anymore attach your grease gun to the brake hose inlet and pump in the grease to remove the piston without damaging it, plenty of people try to get the pistons out withhammers , screwdrivers, multigrips etc and cock them up, just remember to clean all parts until they are spotless before the rebuild

Take digital photos before the dismantlement of anything complex,as stated above .Ive done that before.And buy a book because there is always stuff in there you dont know ,or you can reference back to it.
