Elvis is in ballarat. He drives a genuine sandman with stickers and big signs about the king all over it. I hadnt seen him for about 10 years but i saw it in traffic the other day. Will try and get a photo next time but its like getting a shot of big foot.

Yeah i didnt think he was around anymore. Thought he must have parked the sandman in the big gracelands garage in the sky. Then I saw him in dana street a few months ago. Nearly popped a clog i got so excited. He hasnt left the building after all!

Love to know his story.

Bredbo it is not that serious a issue at all, I am just looking for information on 308Q but the first few posts that were added to this topic (which have since been removed by the mods) were totally unhelpful and pointless. From this I thought your post was the start of the next batch of them.
Maybe I should lighten up a bit but I have always come to Fastlane for factual intelligent answers to questions that others and myself have asked and have always found the people here to be nothing but 100% helpful.
Over the last year and especially the last 6 months this site has been inundated by posts that have no relevance to the questions that have been asked and at times are quite abusive.
Its a pity because more time now is spent going through the crap than reading the good information.
Now something totally unrelated to 308Q but if you want to have a good laugh go to this thread

Paul, I think youll have as much of a chance finding 308Q as you would finding the yellow 350/Z. They both ended up in the same place.

Absinth. I tend to agree with you on that 308Q and 350Z (which I believe is the final stage of Old Man Emu)would have been crushed years ago.
I was mainly looking for more information on the car, the fact that it came to WA and went as far as
doing a tour of the wheat belt dealerships is the thing that surprised me.
350Z/Old Man Emu is something else I would like to find a few more pictures of.
The rear wing on Old Man Emu looks so close to the rear wing that was on the prototype SS and was a optional available on the SSs it uncanny.

Actually the front spoiler on the SSs looks to be a simplified version Old Man Emus one.

The only other thing to add to the 308Q thing is that not all prototypes were destroyed.
The SS prototype was around long after its use by Holden and may actualy still be around now I am told in country Victoria.

I agree about my spelling, I didn,t mean to mis-spell Toronto.
As a separate issue I had forgotten all about 350/z.That was the closes holden got to a factory custom.Inspired a lot of aftermarket suppliers.

Funny, 350/Z is captioned as being a show car but I dont recall ever seeing it at the Motor Show, maybe someone else does. It appears to be a 71 model judging by the lack of headrests on the front seats. You will also notice it has been robbed of some parts as the rear spoiler end piece is missing.

308Q did the show circuit in 73-74. From memory it debuted in Sydney Oct 73, next I think was Brisbane in early Feb 74, then Melbourne late Feb- early March 74, then Adelaide March-April 74, then Perth late April. From memory the rear boot was welded shut and a fair bit of metal infilling to the rear and flaring of the guards. It would not have been road legal and I doubt GMH would have changed it back to on-sell it. Yes some prototypes make it onto the road, they were sometimes offered to GMH executives or preferred dealers, I heard rumours that the superchicken van went to a dealership in Sydney.

The SS prototype is a hard one as I have heard so many different stories about it over the years it is hard to know what is true.

1) It is the prototype SS but it was later decided to use the base model Belmont instead..... I find this a little hard to believe, GMH wanted to test the waters with a 4 dr "sporty" car, why would they start with a loaded with options and high luxury level car. I do wonder why they didnt use the SS grill?

2) It was built after the release of the SS and is the prototype of the 4dr GTS Monaro.... I find this a little easier to believe, but The EMU clay model had SS style stripes, the SS had stripes and the 4dr Monaro that was released had bonnet and boot paint outs ... so why is this car all one colour with just a SS badged grill and SS on the rear spoiler?? A shame they didnt stick with this look and SS instead of calling it a Monaro ... sure would have saved a lot of crap arguments between todays enthusiasts.

3) It was a HQ Premier 308 4sp optioned with GTS dash, aircond, leather interior, rear headrests, 8 track etc for the sales director. It was later fitted with GTS guards and some of the unused SS-350/Z bits and the soon to be released HJ Monaro honeycomb wheels.... Hmm, dont know about this one either but I must admit it seems too optioned up for a prototype and the use of the honeycomb wheels in 71-72 seems strange.

Another strange one with inconsistencies is the so called prototype to the HX LE .... A 75 model HJ Statesman Caprice coupe. Apparently another executives vehicle that was later on sold and now owned by a fellow in Vic.




With the optional front and rear spoilers and bonnet scoop for the SS, do you happen to know the Holden part numbers for them?

I was going to ask if anyone had seen 350Z at any shows because of the showcar heading.
But there seems to be no other pictures of it out there at all.
Which seems strange for a show car.
350Z was pre SS prototype going by this July 1972 article on the SS prototype





From this it says early 72 was the green light for project SS and for the prototype it was a no limits deal.
That the styling exercises 350Z and GTR-X had been done, so that puts both of them as being done
prior to July 1972.
On the Prototype it says that the polycast wheels are imported straight from a Pontiac Trans Am.
With the Ewet (which I have been told the first one was made in March 1972) having them on as well.
It looks like these wheels were around the plant at the time of the prototype being made so were added to it.
They also comment about the rear spoiler first being seen on 350Z.
The car was based on the Premier model going by the prem trim and front end but also had leather seats
and Metallic paint.
I think the overall cost of the prototype is why the SSs were not done to this level in the end.
A cheap car made from a cheap platform ended up being the go.
I see that the rego on the prototype LCJ 009 compared to the Ewets rego of LGL 400 which I have been told should be mid 1972.
So from that was it out and regoed in early 1972.
The final SS concept was well under way by the 21st of June 72 going by this.

So when did all of this happen.

I know this is a old post but I am still looking for any new information on 308Q.
I have also came across this picture of 350Z.



Its from the rear cover of this magazine.



If anyone has a copy of this magazine I would really appreciate a larger version of the rear cover.
