I used to live within moderate walking distance of the Summernats and went every year from the first until I moved to Albury in mid 96. I did drive back for it one year and got asked for ID at the bar whilst I was there. I thanked the bar attendant for that one as I was in my mid 30s at the time.
I moved back to the Canberra area in mid 99 and have been once since because one of my colleagues won a family pass in a raffle and gave it to us.
In 1993 a mate entered his convertible Valiant and I entered as his "buddy" now that was no fun having to watch the car the whole time it was inside the event.
The knuckle draggers stuffed it up when they went on a rampage and flattened some traffic lights. This behaviour brought about the end of the supercruise down Northbourne Avenue.
One year in a stroke of pure logic the organisers decided to only sell light beer......and canned pre mixed spirits.
It would be better if it was an alcohol free event as this would remove the dickheads. Sure it would lessen revenue but insurance premiums and security costs would also drop accordingly.
Revenue dropped this year anyway because attendance was down. Maybe people are starting to realise that $100+ for a 3 day pass to rub shoulders with a bunch of drunken idiots is just too damned expensive.
I did go to its predecessor the Street Machine Nationals in Easter 1984 and easter 1982 from memory. A much more civilised event.
These days I prefer to save my money for our annual jaunt to Ballarat swap meet.
If at first you dont succeed then skydiving is not for you.
