Hey
I have a HJ panelvan with a 253 and was wondering if it was better to use the Permium or the BP ultimate and how much difference it actually makes? I know u get better km's out of the newer fuel injected cars but is it the same form the older carby cars?

From memory, the old Super fuel was about 98 octane in the mid 70's (it dropped to 96 later on) so 98 will be the best for your motor assuming it is in really good nick.

Try PULP for a few tanks and then try 98 for a few and see what your car prefers.

Only use Premium ULP or higher. Never ever use bog standard unleaded. Use valve lube for sure. My QE will get around 17-18MPG around town, and 25MPG on the open road....with a Stromy & 253 Tri combo.

My Q and the ex-wifes VX Calais arent much differnet

I use premium unleaded in my stock standard HQ 253 Monaro and I swear by it.

The car runs perfectly and returns good mileage.

I also use an upper cyclinder lubricant which I buy in bulk which saves you heaps compared to buying it in those little 50m

John, I was actually more interested in the fact that it is highly illegal to remove the catalytic converter on a factory unleaded engine (massive fines) but on an older engine you don't even need to run one. Why then is it illegal to remove on one an un

From memory, the ULP ADR is ADR31 and it mandates the use of catalytic converter(s). The cats operate at VERY high temperatures (in the region of 700 degrees Celsius IIRC) and burn many of the toxic emissions from the motor thereby turning them into less

I recently read an article in a car magazine and they tested some modern hi flow cats on a dyno and found that they had a negligible effect on power output so Dave is right when he said that it is definitely a viable option to retrofit them to an old vehi

Hi Munro..

Sounds like Eskimo Joe and myself could do something with this info. Pity I run twin systems ~ more costs ! So revised heads and valves..twin cats..hmm around $1000.00 I guess.

trubluhq i have a twin system aswell so i guess if i was lookin at that then i would be up for similar cost.

just to add to the conversation, I usually use BP ultimate (98 octane) in my RB30 VL however I have just gone though a tank of 91 octane and it performs really badly in comparison, the car is way more sluggish and pings a heaps under load. I will try 95 o

Compression Ratio of NA VL 3 litre was 9.0:1.

5th gear is 0.759:1.
