Hey all, I just bought a HJ 1 tonner with a 4spd manual box. Anyway I have a trimatic behind a turbo efi 202 that will be ready to go in soon. Is there any cutting or what not to be done to whack in the tri? Will I need different g.box xmember? Also, can anyone give me a ballpark figure on a respray for a tonner? Not to show car standards, there is just a little surface rust that needs removal and the paint (white) is a little crazed on the bonnet.. Thanks in advanced, I am good on the go but not on the show so I'll be asking a few q's about this little project over the next couple months.... trimatic uses same crossmember and should go straight in, the selector may be on the wrong side for the factory shift linkages. all HJ's had selector on driver side of the gear box.

i'm assuming it's already a floor shift...if so the factory auto floor shifter fits right where the manual stick came out of, you may need to do a little cutting and drilling of 4 holes to mount it, like the post above mentions just make sure your lower s

Opps, my bad - when I think 4spd I naturally think "4 on the floor" as opposed to "three on the tree".... so yep it's not the floor. The trans & motor is out of a vk so yes there will be lhs/rhs issues, I didn't realise that - thanks.
Cheers for the i |

depends on who you go to, what type of paint, quality, and all that type of stuff for a tonner any where between $3000 to$7000 Edited by user Tuesday, 16 August 2005 7:24:00 AM(UTC)

I did this exact same conversion in a WB tonner about 10 years ago and the speedo fooled me for a while. The VK EFI Trimatic (if original) should have the V8 speedo drive gear in it, so you will need to select the correct gear for your speedo cable based |

if you use rubber auto coolant lines make sure you use the correct high pressure hose, one of those things i learnt as a young-un *blush* auto fluid sprayed throughout the engine bay (helped along by the fan) isn't nice...

Awesome - thanks all!! Funds permitting I will be getting the tri rebuilt to handle up to ~400hp as I am hoping to get at least 300hp out of the engine. But it's originally from a carby VK 202, will that change the speedo gear config? I am only pick |

Are we talking Holden 6cyl? 400hp? You are kidding aren't you? If you are seriously looking at a turboed or supercharged 202 forget the trimatic. Find a 6cyl Powerglide and spend $2000 on it. The carbied VK trimatic is just a plain Jane 6cyl box. Only t |

He's apparently talking about a 202 with EFI and turbo....
AFAIK, you are right with the EFI VK Trimatics. A V8 box with a 6 cyl bellhousing.
Cheers...Dave

no not kidding.. I think 300hp is attainable from the humble 202 with a little force feeding, and if not - aim for the sky.... I'm not saying "I am the best and I will do it, blah blah blah" It's just a goal. The 400hp is for the box to be strong eno Edited by user Thursday, 18 August 2005 9:49:47 AM(UTC)

If you are going to try to put this sort of hp through a trimatic, go and have a talk to the guys that build them for rotaries. You will be looking for the same style of box, ie one that will handle high rev hp, but limited torque. I'd also find yourself |

Yep, you are right about the V8 etc.... but it has been done soo many times before.
Not saying no one has made big power with turbo 202's but it is a lot rarer. That's the "why".
As for the caps and rods etc I am talking to as many people as possib |

The trimatic should handle that. If you can get a trimatic out of a injected 202 you will have a box that was designed to handle a 253 so has a kick start. You can pick the injected box it is painted black and does not have the hole in the top of the be

He says its a 202 carby so apparently he is fitting the carby gearbox on the efi motor, the carby gearbox won't handle the power but trimatics can be built pretty tough make sure the gearbox people know what you are doing so you only need to fix it once.
