hi guys. were would i find the date code in a hz 253? what should it be for a 6/78 253? want to make sure before sending engine in for rebuild. thanks robert w.a

The date code is below the passenger side head and should look like 23F8 which is 23rd of June 1976. Unless its a replacement engine (Nasco) the date code should be on or before the build month.
The month codes go A=Jan B=Feb etc and "I" is skipped. The last number is the year code but needs to be checked against the engine number prefix and block features.

how long before the car build date would a engine be built? are the engines built in the same month? thanks robert

ive always found the date to be about 2 months before the cars build date, i have seen 1 engine 4 months earlier than the car, but only 1
