Right my old man has decided to put a 327 chev into his HK premier and we want to leave it 3spd on the column.

Is this possible??

My thoughts were that I could use a V8 3spd manual and try and find a bellhousing to suit.

Would the dellow bellhousing for the 4spd saginaw be usable??

OR

Weld in a factory floor shift hole maybe use a powerglide (Already have Chev trans in unknown condition) and chase up Shifters, Linkages, and Blank steering column.

Any advise is appreciated.

Cheers Stephen

You could also make it a Powerglide on the column. This was standard fitment to HK and HT. You just need to use a linkage setup off a HK or HT 307 auto or HT 253/308 powerglide. Youll have to use a HK powerglide column though and youll need a HK V8 powerglide crossmember and speedo cable. Not hard to do.

If you want to keep the 3spd manual on the column youll need the following (assuming its currently a crash box):

HT-HG V8 3spd rat-trap clutch setup including clutch pedal. Most parts off this are the same as a 6cyl all synchro setup and possibly off a 253/308 Saginaw.

308TH/Chev to aussie 3/4spd bellhousing.

Linkage rods for an all synchro in HK-HG (not sure if the columnis different also).

The other easier possibility is to leave the hydraulic clutch setup on the car (if its a crash box) and use a 308TH/Chev to aussie 3/4spd bellhousing with hydraulic slave cylinder on it.

Byron, you forgot the Chev Linkages are on the passenger side of the car not the drivers side like a six cylinder , its not gunna happen with a column shift and right hand drive car and 3 speed manual .

No I dont think I forgot anything. Theres no reason why a SBC wont work with a factory aussie 3spd column shift. Look at it this way, if you had a HT 253 3spd, all youd have to do is fit a SBC to aussie 4spd bellhousing with push fork and itd work. This is the exact setup I was describing. BUT, if the car is currently a crash box with hydraulic clutch itd be easier to fit a slave cylinder to the same bellhousing and run a hydraulic clutch (that way thered be no need to change the pedal box and source all the rat-trap stuff).
The hardest thing to find for a V8 3spd setup will probably be an all-synchro HK gearbox crossmember, although I think a 6cyl powerglide uses the same/similar crossmember. Ive got a complete HK Kingswood with 186 and all synchro 3spd at my mates place with all the stuff on it, but were leaving it together for now as its totally original and I want to strip it for nuts and bolts when it comes time to put my yellow HK GTS together.

The car was originally a 186 with 3spd crash box but were gone before I/He got the car. It has the hydraulic clutch setup but was thinking of moving over to cable clutch (Not sure which is better).

I already have pedals for saginaw type clutch, and the linkages for the 3spd, going to use a all syncro out of a HG a friend of mine has.

Another question is will the 3spd be able to handle the 327???

Cheers Stephen

Sorry i thought you meant you were going to use a Chev 3 speed saginaw , hence the linkages would be on the passengers side . You would be crazy to put a Holden 3 speed behind a 327 .
Just powerglide it or get a saginaw so all the bits are readily available and standard fitment . There are guys around who will have this stuff .

3spd will be fine for a cruiser. They are actually stronger than an aussie 4spd. Ive still got some RHD 57 Chev 3spd linkage setups at home somewhere. These allow a RHD column shift to operate a Saginaw or T10 3spd. Those boxes will bolt in using 4spd Saginaw bellhousing etc.

i ran a 400 ci SBC and a 6 cyl aussie 3 sp + 9" diff in a parts chaser HX for about 2 years.
towed car trailers etc.
Early Speco side shift with wooden knob and benchy... (frank will appreciate)

i brought the bellhousing new from Rod Hadfield to suit the 6 cyl 3 sp. and cable clutch.
the V8 3 speed is hard to find...

If you want to build a V8 3spd I can get NOS V8 3spd input shafts. You just put that and a V8 4spd cover in a 3spd. Easy.

Nothin wrong with the holden 3 speed. Just checkout any speedway track on a saturday night and watch the flogging they get. V8 Amca Nationals all run them and many Modified Production cars run them punching out 250-300 hp at the tires and you dont see many braking.

You can leave the box in 6-cyl form & just use a Dellow bell-housing to fit up to the Chev block. This is how Saginaw & Muncie gearboxes fit (6 & V8 same length).

This means a bit of a fiddle with the gearbox crossmember, but for some people this might be easier than changing the gearbox bits.

The 3-speed all-synchro box will handle the 327 fine.

Hey, sorry to bring this old thread back from the dead, but is there any chance you have any of these crossover linkages around anymore?

I've got myself an original 67 Chevy C10 that was factory ordered RHD. It was originally a 3 speed column shift, but a previous owner hacked the floor and put in a floor shift, but tossed all the column shift gear. I want to put it back to 3OTT.

Pretty sure they are still up on the mezzanine. I also have an original '55-'57 Chevy cast iron manual bellhousing for a factory RHD V8 car. I think it came from one of the handful of RHD V8 3spd '55-'57 Chevys that GMH assembled. Allows you to use the original bellhousing side and front of engine mounts and retain the RH clutch fork setup. Not sure if '67 C10's used this setup still.

Wow. Awesome. I'm interested.

My C10 came with the factory RHD bellhousing, but if you have one laying around, I wouldn't mind a spare.

Can you drop me an email at russellmcw at hotmail dot com, so we can talk further and hopefully make a deal?

Cheers,
Russ
