What was the actual model sandman produced from factory, sold to the public as a legitimate sandman and with papers to prove it?

Ive heard there were only 200? I'm wondering what sort of truth is in that? Perhaps there were 200 from one factory or 200 legitimate with papers and not engineered replicas designed after purchase!

In relation to the modern sandman (based on the concept sandman), were the sandmans made in Japan or Australia? And what years of production?

What were on the id tags? Did holden make them with XX7/XU3 on the id tag and only in QLD? Did the holden factories in other states design there own unique id tags for the modern sandman (if they were made in other states that is!)?

What does the information on the id tags mean? How do you tell the difference between a replica, dealer optioned and a factory made sandman?

Post your comments and pictures? Lets gather all the information we can while its available - phamplets, brochures, videos...etc

Lets also seperate fact from fiction i.e. "my mates dad knows a bloke who worked for holden"....thats all great, but nothing beats the real physical data such as; information with holden logos, letterheads, statements, interviews, newspaper and journal articles, news footage and other.

"Based on the VU Holden Ute the one-off special Holden Sandman is the result of a creative collaboration with Australian surf and streetwear company, Mambo".

Should pretty much answer most of your questions. The last car to come off the QLD production line was a Camira before the factory was shut down in 1984. The last Sandman produced from the factory and sold to the public was a HZ in 1979.

I posted that link and you should note it doesnt show the publication date (only mentions date of motor show), which I mainly posted hoping someone would catch the last paragraph:

"We look forward to seeing highways throughout Australia eventually gridlocked by a whole new generation of Sandmen and women," Dare Jennings concluded.

clearly they were taking the piss about the gridlock thing.

Didnt realise that QLD was totally stripped of rights to produce Holdens, though I knew about the acacia ridge plant closing, damn shame. Dont know if the elizabeth plant is still going, it was still in operation from april 2009.

Sure, Ill agree the concept panelvan wasnt reproduced exactly as it looks i.e. entry into cabin, though if you could order a "sandman" (with canopy), then its a sandman right? And it would be a still pretty much be sandman no matter whether you got it optioned by a dealer or engineered to be a replica of the concept car?

Guess you could call them a hybrid ute/panelvan type sandman combo.

Are holden dealers manufacturing decals for the VU, VY and VZs? I ask as there is some conflicting information on the worlds wild women (www lol) - http://www.ls1.com.au/fo...howthread.php?p=1550221, they seem to be the series 2 Sandman logo - HX-HZ style.

Here are some other links:

http://www.nova1069.com....eract/nova_sandmans.aspx EDIT: repaired link.
http://www.ls1.com.au/fo.../showthread.php?t=113443

Are holden making special "sandman" orders?

If holden havent actually made any sandmans since either the infamous single WB or the HZ range, then what do we call the VUs getting around as sandmans?

Continuing on with the non-existence of modern sandman idea; if holden were to make sandmans again i.e. ones that are legitmate and advertised by holden, then what type of compliance id tag system should they use for allowing the vehicles to be identified easily by future buyers 30 years from now and beyond?

On another topic - I noticed holden pulled down the information about the original sandmans from their website too, which wouldve been within the last three months, hopefully theyll update it and while they are at it find the lost records of the adelaide plants late HZs.

The canopy was fitted by HBD, and the utes were plated with a HBD build plate.
A relative bought one early on, and it has the canopy fitted, and the rear window in the ute cab removed & trimmed up.

Cheers,

Mick

The constructors name is Chris but his business name eludes me at the moment, he supplied these to GMH. I have bumped into Chris on and off over 25 years. I once saw one of these canopys on a VU? ute parked outside a primary school some years back. I stopped to have a look at it and Chris appeared from the school. After a brief chat he told me that he made the Sandman/Mambo one and was about to supply GMH with them as a regular option.

Not good enough for "replica concept sandman HBD"?. The concept sandman looks as though the dash, centre console and steering wheel is leather....DROOL.....clean up on aisle 4.

Only last week I saw a VE Style van painted in morphous parked in a shopping center, it has full metal roof & a steel panel at the rear of the seats stopping just bellow the head rests, If I see it again I will get some pics.
Thinking about it, give it some reto HQ sandy stripes in white would look nice.

I first owned a V6 Sandman but had problems with the canopy. After 13k klm, I traded it in for a V8. Both vans are/were in Cosmo Mica.

Hi

The HBD Panelvan Canopy was built by FTP Pty Ltd for HBD/Holden, their is a full record of the orginal ones done and it was between 200-300 Units. FTP Pty Ltd also built the fibreglass sections on the Mambo Panelvan. They havent been available as on aftermarket part, but the might be in the future, if they are the ID Plate and the construction method will make them easy to tell apart.

I currently produce the AMCAT VE Panelvan Canopy (amcat. com.au)

I dont come on this forum much but I will check and can try and answer any questions.

We also offer full parts replacements on the HBD fitted ones.

I know this because I worked with Mike Simco on the Mambo and I started and owned the company that made them for HBD (FTP).

Chris
