hey guys lookin at doin a conversion of a V6 into a HZ ute, just wonderin if anyone knows any information as to which is the best motor to put in, normal vs ecotec? which model? i know VS motors crack the heads and were known for oil consumption but have also heard good things about them, whats the deal? what were the differences? also heard that the earlier engines were stronger but dont know how much truth is to that. thanks

If you do get a VR V6, make sure that you check the oil pickup blts in the sump while you have the engine out. The VR pickup is held on by bolts that come loose, and can only be reached by dropping the sump. Easy to do while out, can't be done while in.

It also depends on what you want to run in the way of steer/air and how good you are with electrics.

With an early V6 in an HQ - WB, you can only run steer OR air, but not both as the aircon compressor hits the crossmember when mounted in its normal po

Forgot a bit...

If by saying "also heard that the earlier engines were stronger", you mean that the early V6 motors had more torque, so were faster off the mark, you are correct. The Ecotechs had less low down power, but better mid-range and top end po

It was only the series 1 VN that had the different cranks between manual & auto. The way to pick a series 1 is the top radiator hose goes along the side of the block to enter the thermostat housing at the rear.

You want to get one that has the top rad

The pickup problem doesn't manifest as using oil, it shows up as unreliable oil pressure. The pickup is bolted to the bottom of the block, and if the bolts come loose, it can suck air as well as oil.

This is what I was tols when my oil pressure starte
