My guess, for what its worth, is that it was originally a 253 V8, if the Saginaw & 10-bolt are original.

1. This is an early HT & 308 V8s werent available that early in 80837s.
2. 307 V8s were vitually all automatics at that time. 307 manual HTs are ultra rare.
3. You cant be 100% certain using those numbers alone & without access to the production records.

Doc, 253 didnt get a 10 bolt. Id also say 253 too due to the low numbers meaning the 10 bolt isnt original, but it may just sneak into 308 territory.

Not rare as such but not that common to have that combo in an 837 GTS as to get both of these it has to be a 5 litre 4spd. To all intents and purposes 307 4spd doesnt exist, and 308 4spd is not that common. Your mates GTS must have been a 308 4sp.

Ive seen one only 80837 307 Chev and Saginaw.
It was in N.Z in the form of an HK Monaro. It raced at Baypark Raceway regulary near Tauranga in the mid to late 70s.
Was a bronze colour with black stripes on hood and deck lid.
I remember this car well, as it won most races it entered, and blitzed cars like E-49 Chargers, Mustangs, 1st Gen Camaros, and even GT Falcons.
I think it was just a freak of nature, or the bloke that owned and raced it, just wasnt scared to thrash the thing around the track.

If it was a HK it couldnt have been an 80837. 307 Saginaw were quite common in HK 80737. Only two or three 307 Saginaw HT GTS are known of.

1968-1698 HKs Monaros came out with a 327CHEV, the later model HT still had the 350Chev but later versions started trending to the Holden Motors, I think most if not all HGs had the Holden Engines. The Early Broughams had 307Chevs in them. HQs Statesmans had options for the 350Chev and Holden motors, though I dont recall a HQ Statesman having a 253 in it.

What the???

Yes HK had 327 but not in 737 GTS (apart from the original brochure car).

350 engine was standard for HT and HG 1837.

Yes HK Broughams were all 307. HT and HG were all 308.

HQ Statesman had 202, 253, 308 and 350.

307, and 327 were fitted in HK Monaro and Brougham had 307.
HQ Statesman did recieve 253 and 202 six cylinder - This model was Statesman Custom, as Deville had 308 and 350 was an option.

Your correct Byron - 80737 (my typo error) I didnt think the Saginaw was common on 307 HK Monaro, every one Ive seen except the Bronze one that I posted about above was Powerglide Trans. They were common in NZ.

Just something ive always wanted to share with other Monaro people.

Quite a while ago I went to buy a white HT GTS 307 Automatic.
He said its all factory but when i checked the tags it was an 80737 car.

I told him that this should have a 186S from factory and told him i was dissapointed to drive half way across Sydney to find it non genuine.

To my surprise he pulled out the original log books and every number matched including the 307 engine number and the 80737.

It was white,no stripes with red interior. This was around 1991-2.

I know it was a while ago but i always remebered this particular car.

And if youre curious, no,i didnt buy it.

HK 80737 just means its a GTS... it could have either 307 or 186.

Not in HT. 737 in HT is a 186S.
