I know its a bit like how long is a bit of string!! but a rough idea would be good thanks
What kind of PCM faults will cause the engine check light to stay on constantly with no loss of drivability, It passes the startup check engine light goes out then relights after about 5 seconds of running. The oil pressure light does work, I've had that happen before..so I've counted that out...everything works as it should...good power, auto shifts fine, idles ok, no surging, traction control, cruise everything works. Vehicle is VXII V8/A4 wagon. I know I'll need to get it scanned but it has no apparent faults!! Any ROUGH ideas??

The Delco EFI system is very intelligent. If it sees a fault (which it has, because the light is on) it can substitute its own value for that sensor. The car will still drive with no apparent dramas. Emissions, economy & outright power can suffer but day-to-day driving will still feel OK. Common causes can be anything from a faulty oil pressure or manifold air temperature sensor.

Just get it scanned.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

as dr T says get it scanned wont cost much, the delco system is the best in the world according to some computer and softwear engineers (i believe with the ve commodore now use a bosch system????)
it,s obiously a problem, with the vx there is something like 26 codes that can log and wont bring the check light on hence the reason for scanning at every service. as terry say the computer can replace a missing value from a sensor, so to bring the light on will be oil pressure sensor or emissions related etc.
get it scanned i beileve terry is in sydney and im in brisbane.

probably cost you $100 to get its scanned at automasters etc...
why not buy the efi diagnosis kits off ebay and do it yourself for $150 on your laptop, then you can always DIY your EFI.
