can anyone tell me the correct clearance for roller rocker running solid cam and lifter have been told .020 to .040 thou but are unsure what it should be

It should be on the cam specs card, because it will be defined by the cam grinder. If you havent got the specs find the cam card, do a search or experiment with it , if you have the skill & time available.

If you vary the amount of valve clearance this will vary the actual duration of the cam.

what should i start at .040 and go down from there

you can sometimes read specs on end of cam, then look up on web site.

Google it with the cam model or its equivalent,as old fella said,if not replace the cam with one you do know(big job i suppose) but you can start .40 and work down from there you can usually tell how it runs,ps get some possi locks as it saves ALOT of retuning.(found that out the expensive way)
