Rare Spares would appreciate information on these two new dwell switch plastic covers that have been made, tested and in production. What model does each one suit?

To be pedantic the one on the right is only a normal wiper/washer switch off an HJ, not a dwell wiper control. The HJ dwell control which is quite rare, has one round knob for dwell & washer & one rectangular knob for the wiper. The one on the left if for HZ & also WB commercials. The HX one is very similar to the HZ/WB, but the symbols are a different style. The HX symbols for wipe & washer are the same style as the HJ switch. In summary, you have illustrated 2 types, but there are 2 more not shown. BTW, they are shown upside-down. Dr Terry. |

Thanks Dr Terry. They are only sitting that way for the photo. There are a couple of others as you say but possibly not viable at present.I may have an old sample of the HJ dwell there but it would need a new tool due to the switch and knob shapes. The two shown will be available soon.

Sorry to go OT .. have wondered, but never gone and measured. whether the size of any of the later dwell switches is the same or smaller than that of the basic HQ switch.
Would be nice feature to install in an HQ that sees a few miles.

Yes, I agree about the viability issue. The HJ one with dwell is quite rare & possibility would never justify the tooling costs but you could make the HX one by just using the HZ plastic & putting the different symbols on it. Dr Terry |

I once saw a complete HQ GTS instrument assembly at a swap meet, where somebody had neatly grafted an HJ dwell control switch in place of the stock wiper switch. It didnt seem to need much modifying to make it fit either. In fact the seller was telling the lookers that it was a rare factory prototype thingy. This was in the days before eBay, so they didnt invent the rare Nasco XU-1 Monaro sales con, as everybody thinks. Dr Terry |

I have a HJ with the dwell control in my car and I think the only difference from the standard switch is the hole for the washer button. The washer button is round for the dwell unit but I think it is still in exactly the same position therefore the only change required would be a round hole instead of a rectangular hole and the different symbols. |

Ive got a HJ dwell setup here somewhere, with a cut harness. Big difference with HJ is the wiring is part of the harness, where the later ones are a separate harness altogether. I think WB have a longer harness too. I think I have the HJ one, a complete WB unit and a HZ one here somewhere. Possibly a UC one as well. I dont think theres a HX example but will look. Les, youll need to use the right plastic too as the way they are made (see the pointy W end?) they sit on top of a light source and carry the light up through the plastic to illuminate the cotrols, just like a primitive (and very lossy) fibre optic setup.

HK1837, do you mean that the WB commercial harness is longer than the HZ version or are you referring to the WB Statesman type being longer ? I would have thought that the HZ & WB commercial type would had the same length harness. Dr Terry. |

I thought they should too, but I pulled one out of a very original WB Kingswood recently and the harness was heaps longer, it went up in and over everything, and the dwell control unit mounts over between the column and the radio. The HZ style is nice and compact and comes out of a complete car easily, with the control unit mounted on the RH door pillar just near the fuse box. You can easily see the differences also in the HZ and WB parts catalogues ilustration sections.

Byron,
I have removed and fitted several HJ dwell controllers, they are readily available in late HJ, becomeing standard on lots of combinations.
The controller itself has to have a wire removed from the connector to fit it, it is in the ngineering instructions if you find one in a nasco box.

The one I have came out of a very odd HJ Kingswood ute (2 tone paint, 253 M40 with 2.78 LSD). The wiring was integral to the harness. I had to cut it out.

Thats right, they hite wire, that you opn th connector on in HX/Z/WB to fit, you have to remove from the HJ wire harness and plug in the white wire from the dwell contrller in its place. Or cut it in your case.
The first one I fitted to n HJ was removed that way. If you go to remove another use a small screwdriver to remove the wire from the connector
