Hi i am curenetly doing up a 1969 ht,
i have a hq statesman line up with a 308 auto and i was wanting to know what part would fit into the ht
eg. radiator?
308 engin mounts?
exusahust manafolds?
auto?
diff?
and any thing else that i should know

Youll need to change:

Sump and pickup (HT-HG 253/308);
Engine mounts and engine mount adapters to HT/HG 253/308.

Exhaust manifolds should be OK. Trimatic will bolt straight in using a HT 3spd synchro manual or trimatic gearbox crossmember. 6cyl powerglide one is OK too I think.

You can use the 6cyl tailshaft and diff centre but it would be advisable to either change to a V8 banjo centre or get a V8 yoke fitted to your existing centre, and then get a V8 tailshaft. Generally most HK-HG V8 tailshafts will fit, just avoid those from a Salisbury equipped vehicle. HT-HG Brougam again is perfect for the diff centre and the tailshaft.

Youll be able to operate the HQ trimatic from a HT/HG column shift trimatic setup, but a standard HT/G trimatic T-bar wont work as these are LH side shift (like a Commodore, UC or WB t-bar), so an aftermarket T-bar might be the go especially if the HT wasnt originally a floor shift.

The HQ trimatic is an electric kickdown and HT/G trimatics are cable kickdown, so if you want your kickdown to work youll have to adapt a kickdown switch somewhere on the accelerator linkage or pedal setup. Have a look under the dash of the HQ Statesman at how the kickdown switch works on the pedal and youll see it wont be too hard to adapt it or something like it.

Statesman radiator will fit but might need a few different holes drilled to make it fit. Either use the transmission cooler in the radiator or fit an aftermarket one. I like to use plastic coated copper LPG oil lines with original nuts put on before the copper is flared, but nipples on box and radiator with rubber oil lines between works OK too.

Youll have to chase up a HT or HG 308 accelerator linkage. Any HT or HG Brougham will have one.

I think that is about it, apart from modifying an engine harness off a 6cyl HT/HG to work, or find an original HT/HG 253/308 one. HQ might also have an internally regulated alternator so some minor mods possibly needed to remove the external regulator off the HT.

Then get your exhaust done. It might be just as easy to get a new complete exhaust with extractors.

Oh, almost forgot. If the HT doesnt have disc brakes you might have to fit a disc brake front end, booster and master cylinder.

While youve got the 308 and tranmission apart to do the sump and pickup change, change the converter seal on the trimatic and get the box checked out, filter change etc.

Hello HK1837 are you saying that a 253 or 308 sump out of a HQ would fit. and would all brakes from the hq fit on the ht?

No, I stuffed up on that and since fixed the post. Youll have to change the sump and pickup to a HT/G one as for some stupid reason I was thinking the other way around for the first paragraph (ie HT engine into HQ).

HQ stubs, discs and calipers will fit the HT but will also change the stud pattern. Use HT steering arms. Ideally you modify the caliper for a top entry hose and plug the bottom hole (same as how L34 is done). Rear drum backing plates are the same, and drums are the same too except the HT ones have a different drilling for the different stud pattern. I have seen HK-HG banjo axles redrilled for HQ pattern but im not sure how good it works out. If you do it you can fit the HQ drums straight on to the HT backing plates and shoes. Just watch the wheel cylinder size - personally Id fit new HQ size ones and use the HQ master cylinder, although the HT one will operate it all OK I believe. HQ-HZ GTS rims look and fit well on HTs.

gooday is sump in the way of steer arms link and is drum to drum on diff same width as i dont have car in flesh as yet (hq) and is a ht sump hard to come by sorry to be a pain in the diff is there mutch sale for HQ mod statesman bodey all most no rust thanking you Sam

Yes, HQ sump fouls the steering. HQ diff is wider. If the HQ Statesman is any good youd be better off selling it as a goer and find another engine and box.

I thoughtthe same thing, but it might be something cooler than a HQ Statesman eg HT coupe.

Cant do that the car has been in the family since new and it was my nans it has sentimentle value( and i wish it was a coupe=)

HT Kingswood or Prem is way cool too. Probably not as practical a car as a HQ Statesman, but sentimental value is important.

Greg at Classic Ozwreck is cool. I bought a towbar for my Monaro from him. He is honest and reliable.

I agree with Byron. Don't break up the Statesman. Just get the bits you need to create a V8 HT sedan. Don't cringe about four doors. Hot HT sedans had just as much street cred when I was growing up. A few photos would be great as you create your monster. How about it?

thats right nick. dont part out a HQ statey unless its rusted in half at least..

i have original HT &HG brougham 308 motors, p/glides & trimatics & all th bits youl need to convert. leave th stato complete & sell to an enthusiast..
HT/G wont be worth that much with HQ gear in it anyway
