i am looking at buying a HQ ute with pretty severe rust in the left and right hand cowls. apart from that the ute looks to be in good nick so i am pretty keen to buy it, my question is how hard is it to repair rust in cowls? im not at home so i dont have access to my car to have a look at how the cowls are attatched, but there are cowls for sale on ebay for about $50 and i was thinking i could just buy a set and replace them? is that possible? also, if i bought this i would need to sell my 76 HX, would i be better to sell it with bathurst globe mags on or original wheels?

Its not so bad if you have patience, im doing the same job right now i bought the rare spares cowl ends and there not a bad fit i had to use my old anvil to get them the right shape and make sure you do it with the door lined corect so you can get the right gap. I also have unpicked the whole front cowl and restoring underneath the ute im doing was rusted right thru so bad that when i took the door off the bolt plates fell down. I will be posting pics in the coming months of the process. I also have to restore up the pillars on both sides and fabricate new roof gutters and whole new sections of the roof on boths sides. i should be finished and pics up by mid late november. Be ready to find more rust then you hoped for when you remove the cowl ends. drop me an email and i can post a few pics of what you might be up against.

changing cowl panels is a big job, and if it is as bad as you say then chances are there will be more rust under that, which is really difficult to repair, this is a very common rust area on these cars and it usally looks worse once the area is stripped down

It is not hard to fix. Taking all of the parts off takes time, swapping the panels, repairng the extra rust underneath and where the new panels weld onto, painting, reassembling. If you do it right, and dont cut corners, maybe 40 hours work! That is if you have all of the tools required.

The ute im doing had a little rust bubble, but underneath it was completly wrecked. Have you done rust before? you can do a bodge job and be happy or you could be like me and spend way to much time re-shaping something to perfection that noone will ever see! At least my brothers ute will last another 35 years when done properly even if it is just a ute.

Done my van both sides,it aint that easy but if you do it, use the door and your lower windscreen chrome to line it all up.Also do the sub frame underneath and you should use stacks of stop rust during this repair ,mine was welded in buy a professional mate looks awesome.

exellent pics jim, shows just what i was saying, it looks much much worst when its opened up
and for the average dude its not a easy fix, it requires lots of cutting and welding,
not so bad if you tooled up to do it, and if your car is already pulled to bits

Dont stuff around with Rare Spares rust repair sections unless you have to. Try and find a good cowl on a donor wreck. I still see good ones coming into Classicozwreck. Just buy a firewall cut and unpick it all, then swap it over. Clean the donor stuff up underneath and paint it before fitting it.

yeah i looked at the link the car looks really nice but looking at that cowl id say it needs alot of work. you will have to disasemble alot of the car, remove the windscreen, front clip and then who knows what else you will find it will never pass a roadworthy like that and will leak water all thru the car when it rains, then ya car fogs like a bitch and stinks like all the old utes lol. the old ute im doing hardly showed up signs of rust and its got some serious cancer and your is showing majorly. the car may not be worth the hastle for the price? your email says it cant except the pics dunno why i tried 3 times it just rejected me, and i pasted your email aswell.

bronsonHX,The cowls on my car were bad but ive seen alot worse, cant wait till you see them now that they are welded in with an under color silver .If I didnt fix them we would lose yet another old aussie car.If they were on a monaro people would be lineing up to buy it and fix them.
Its all relative to what you can...afford ,do,like ..cant get out of!...get stuck with!..enjoy etc.once you start youll get bitten like we all have an want to paint it anyway.I happen to like the old HQs
