i also would have asked that question. kind of looks like a mustang back end. charger front end? maybe its a plymouth? im just stabbing in the dark haha.

In the first pic it looked like a Fiat 124, and i thought "sweet". Then i realised it was a P76 and i thought "even sweeter".
Truth is there arent too many shapes that dont look good when sitting low over some fat rolling stock. |

Next to a nursery up here theres a dozen or so of these rotting away. At lest someone has found a good use for one. In my opinion heaps better than doing the same thing to a Japanese car.

I dont know whats to laugh about The P76 won car of the year in 73 i think, it had more innovation and safety points than Holden and that ever brilliant 4.4 alloy V8 which was every bit of the 308s performance.
How long before Holden got an alloy V8..?

Youngish bloke around the corner has one in light blue, he brings it out now and then. He drives down my street because if I am out the front I flag him down to have a chat. The old man owned it and passed it on. Its a cracker, I can remember them as a young tacker, I was very little and some mate of my dads had one.
I knew what it was straight away Frank and it looks mint.

the sales brochures of the day had the P76 as the first car to fit a 44 gallon drum in the boot and close the bootlid.

Not quite. It was originally design by Buick. Its actually a very close cousin to the early Commodore V6 engine. In the mid-60s Rover purchased the design from Buick for used in road cars. Jack Brabham & Phil Irving purchased the design (& all existing castings) for use in race cars (Repco Brabham F1). In Rovers it was only 3.5-Litres. Rover was taken over by British Leyland, then when Leyland Aust needed a V8 for the P76, this was the unit they had access to. To my knowledge the 4.4-Litre version is an Australian development. Later Rover enlarged their version to 3.9-Litre & beyond for RangeRovers etc., but this was nearly 2 decades after the P76 was released. While the P76 had a lot going for it, theres a few things which let it down. It was the right car at the wrong time. At that time we had massive inflation & hideous union & labour cost issues. This was also the time of the first Arab oil crisis. The cars themselves were reasonably well designed but badly put together & they had many warranty problems. Also when people hear of the P76, the first things that come to mind are the alloy V8 & the top-line Executive model or the Targa Florio version. But most of the P76s that were sold to the public were DeLuxe models with the crappy 2.6-Litre 6-Cylinder engine. Dr Terry. |
