Hmm. HK26964SS as a chassis number places the body shell (or firewall (or part thereof)) as an (approx) July 1968 Pagewood, Sydney built shell. However the VIN and BODY plates are off a Dandenong, Melbourne built GTS. Looks like a GTS tag swap onto another shell. Shell is still worth good money. Tags are now only a bar/wall ornament or scrap alloy. UNLESS the chassis number reads HK26964SM (or MS - I cant remember off the top of my head which way although I think SM is correct for Sydney body manufacture, Melbourne vehicle assembly). The SS, SM or MS would appear on the firewall with the second letter underneath the other in a different font and impression depth.

J167 makes it one of the last Monaros built, so one of the first built at Pagewood and one of the last built at Dandenong.

As the tags do not belong to that car they are irrelevent in the equation, you can check the body for other signs to try and determine the original driveline.
But first of all you have to determine what it was, ie a Monaro, Monaro GTS or Monaro GTS327.

That looks better. Its a HK GTS, so itll be one of the following combos:
186S Opel 4spd; 186S Powerglide; 186S Saginaw 4spd; 307 4sp; 307 Powerglide.
Being a very early Pagewood HK it could still be a 307 auto and have banjo and 5" rims. So the best telltale for a 307 will be the second speedo cable hole in the firewall below the wiper motor. If thats not there youll have to look to the wiring harness for reverse switch wires for a 4spd, if not there itll be an auto. Unlikely to be a 186S Saginaw. If it has a 307 speedo cable hole check for Saginaw linkage hump on passengers side of the transmission tunnel, basically just to the right of where the passengers right foot goes. Not there its an auto.

Saginaw (& Opel) reverse light wiring exits thru the plastic wiring connector plug in the centre of the firewall & then runs down behind the engine. Reverse light wiring is twin green (a dark green & a light green). Dr Terry |

Hello westozmonaro,
Of interest would be the original colour/trim of the donor body shell used (the one with the Sydney Chassis Number in it). The ID plate may say it is Ermine White with black trim now, but what was it when first built?

just read on old holden web site that the early HK had id tags in middle of the firewall , then later models on the top edge , this car has been identified above as one of the first pagewood bodies , but the only tag holes are on the top of the firewall , not the middle of the firewall , were there many cars where the body was built but for some reason not assembled till much later on in the series ?? fro what ever reason body damaged in production ect

Its not all that early. HK started in January 1968 and Monaros werent built in large numbers until July 1968. The BODY tag swapped up onto the cowl in about August. Your chassis is HK269xxSS. I have the following Pagewood numbers:
337-00249 - chassis HK226xxSS. 737-00020 - chassis HK231xxSS. 1837-00002 - chassis HK231xxSS.
These all have firewall BODY tags and the 2 x GTSs are both July builds. The Monaro is a little earlier.
