Has come up pretty much out of nowhere over the last few days to the point where its constant.
Noise happens on takeoff and through each gear, or when i'm under load/throttle, but not at cruise, and stops when i depress the clutch. Sounds like a leaf in a fan spinning slowly, then accelerates, then becomes a squeaky, constant rotating noise. In the last day, it's developed severe vibration under acceleration or even light load.
So, i'm thinking tailshaft, or, judging by the location of the sound, yoke on the gearbox output shaft? It really has come basically from nowhere, and it hasn't been driven hard much lately at all.
It's a 202 HQ Kingswood, aussie 4 speed.

Many years ago, I had a similair sound coming from a collapsing front uni joint. I lost all the needle rollers from one cup & destroyed the uni. Vibration will probably be from the shaft being a little out of whack due to uni failing to hold it in alignment. Inspect both front & rear, I would probably bank on it being the front. If you find it is one of the unis, replace both. Utility8 |

3 things Ive had that made the same noise:
1. As above, uni joint (luckily mine held together thanks to the circlip, and I found it before it let go.
2. Chipped tooth in the diff (floated around for a while until it meshed between the teeth & all the fun ended with a massive tailslide at 60km/h).
3. Chopped tooth on the layshaft in the manual gearbox (after learning from the diff, I didnt drive it after I got it home). I pulled the tailshaft, then the diff, and after finding nothing wrong, ran the car w/out a tailshaft & it was still there, so I pulled the box & found it.
All of these would go ticker-ticker-ticker when under power, even at slight throttle openings, but would cease on the over-run, or when putting the clutch in while moving.

HQforme,
It might also be either the throwout bearing and/or the diaphram fingers/springs about to die big time. If the clutch plate/diaphram balance is upset youll know about it.
Hope this is of use.

A big ten points to you all!
Front uni join. Reason i didnt pick it with the old tailshaft wiggle and feel for slop, was because part of the uni was starting to seize up, but that made it feel ok to wiggle. Truth was it ended up totally seizing and flogging out the rest of it.
Helps to have mates at the wreckers. Took a lap with im in the car, threw it on the hoist, "theres your problem" and just chucked a spare shaft in there yesterday arvo.
Thanks guys. |
