Hey, just arrived on the forum so heres what I drive. Its a '75 HQ (yes the tag is right, its an NZ build) Statesman. Always wanted an V8 holden and we I had the coin I just went out and got what I always wanted. Been spending the last 12 months tidying her up and now have it driving sweet. Saving up for a better paintjob and newinterior.

Good stuff man - a blokes first car is always a treasure!

Im loving those car stands (although the pass side one is scaring me a little!!) Paint doesnt look to bad - cant even see any rust holes!

Anyway, looking forward to the updates.

the stato looks great, im a bit fan of the HQ statesmans

is there many HQs (or any other old holdens) getting around NZ or is it a rare sight?

Looks good mate. I like the dumpers behind the rear wheels.

Wouldnt get me under the car with those axle stands though!

Haha I knew Id get comments on that. Relax fellas there is proper axle stands holding it up (you can just see the corner of one behind the wood block). That work was done in the parents driveway and the old lady (in her infinate wisdom)thought the axle stand was insufficient to hold her up, wood was required and I was threatened with the lack of a meal if I didnt put them under there. Paint really is quite average, think it was a single-coat spray can job and can wait to have that remedied. Any ideas on a colour? I was thinking midnight blue.

The dumpers were a birthday present (dad is petrol head from way back). Just dropped her off in the body shop this morning to get the rear parcel tray fixed up since previous owners insisted on cutting it up to fit speakers. Camera decided to pack up so no details on the damage.

As for the number of HQs in NZ, there is getting fewer and fewer around (as I imagine is the same in oz) and you pay a fair penny just to get one which is roadworthy, even more if its got a v8. Though we probably have more HQs around than any other older holden. Because of govt regulations in the mid 70s we have bugger all of the later holdens and few (LH LX) toranas. Torana hatches are almost non-existent unless you have a heavy wallet and since I want one in the future Im looking at the cost of importing a shell from Oz. There are still a few GTR toranas in resorable condition that come up every so often, of which I believe a few have been shipped back over the ditch.

Ok so time for a bit of an update. Only a few photos to show what Ive been up to recently. Sadly like many of us I never took enough photos of how bad the beast was when I got it, or after each step. However so far (6 months) I have done the following...

Chrome side-exit exhausts (birthday present)
Replace lower diff arm (bent)
New rear brakes
Repaired and recalibrated fuel tank sender and gauge
Repair to parcel tray area (butchered for speakers)
Repair to l/r sill (area cut out by previous owners to stash drugs, lol)
S/H set of power windows and switches
Original GM rear lap belts fitted (wrong color though)
New retractable belts fitted in front
Balanced driveshaft (vibrated like f**k)
Rebuilt Trimatic fitted
Some rust removed from door areas
Resealed front windscreen
s/h dash facia with fishscale insert (looks kind of like the factory metal GTS item, fooled a few people since the dash that is in it has been pulled out of a GTS monanro)
Rewired loom (worse my auto sparky had ever seen)
New wiper motor fitted
New electronic dizzy, leads, and plugs
Rebuilt heads, new lifters
New 600 Holley carb
Rebuilt starter
New w/pump
Gilmer drive set up
Recored radiator with twin thermos fitted
Rust removed from rad support panel (anyone seen one which hasnt rusted out the arse?)

So heres my radiator with thermos, pretty happy with how its set up. Bolted the bracket up to the original hole for the cowl so its easy as to remove.



Gilmer drive set up was a bit fiddly to fit (Procomp part so not really surprised). Missis hates the noise of it so might have to go back to the original pulleys until I get some dynamat in.



So happy to have the tailshaft balanced. Looks liked it was f**d the moment it was made since there was a heap of factory weights on the same spots. Luckly he was able to straighten it out with a bit of heat on the highs and now we are down to only 1 weight. Looks better in black compared to the factory pink.



Someone might be interested in the tag too. Appears to have been built 73 but wasnt sold until august 75



Would also appreciate what this tag means, its the only other one on it and have no ideal what the codes mean.



Thought I might throw up a few shots of the shed. For a young fulla who hasnt been in this house long Im already getting a bit of stuff (crap) accumulated.





I should be finished most of the work on it for a while yet. Got it driving nice so I think Ill just enjoy it over the summer. Plan to pull the engine and front end off as we get into winter so I can rebuild the front end/brakes and give the bay a bit of a paint. Bodywork will be about 12 months away.

midnight blue would look pretty nice i thnk, but so would any dark colour i think..wouldnt go anything like absinth yellow or anything too bright..

Like the way you are presenting this. My suggestion for a colour is current VE Commodore Poison Ivy, reckon it would look sensational on a HQ Stato.

Second vid is uploaded, be sure to check it out. That's a striking colour and I do like it, I'm pretty set on midnight blue (or a 'smokey' blue) so I'll have to see how I go.

Just started stripping down the front end, found some surprises already ;)


Parts are slowly piling up...


Whoever did the previous panelwork lap welded the rust patches it, what a way to create more rust...


No wonder the windscreen leaked a little bit...


Back of the bumpers are a little rusty, but nothing a wire wheel and some POR15 wont fix

Got some more stuff done this week, mostly painting suspension parts...



and practising my new favorite hobby



Bought some new doors in case I may need them, otherwise I'll panelbeat them new and resell



The fact that they have different overspray patterns makes me think
they're from two different factories. Cool to see these markings too.



Cleaning up some plastic parts with my 'secret recipe', this is an HR dash for my collection

Well I havent posted here in a while so here you go...

Subframe is off, will be filling holes in the firewall and repainting.



Filling in more holes....



Just started stripping the paint off these, hope to have the inner guards and firewall in primer in the weekend



the subframe was a little grubby



Cleaned it up and hit it with some primer








It's been a productive weekend, sold some parts online and got more for them than I thought so went and bought a few new toys for the shed including a new spray gun kit. It was on order so imagine my surprise when I got it on fri. This also arrived...



Scored it for $60 online which is a hell of alot better than the $400 I was quoted from a wreckers for a S/H unit. By the looks of it someones given it a good clean but I'll give it a once over, for a start it has too much end float in the shaft.

So got the firewall in filler primer, then a mate of mine came round to help refit the subframe, went back in alot easier than I thought it would but I wouldnt want to piss around installing it on your own.





Also got the inner guards in primer and them sprayed a coat of chip guard





So it's been a pretty productive weekend, hope to have the firewall in top coat by the end of next week and the engine put back in.

It's been two steps forwards and one backwards this week, was able to take the windscreen out without breaking it (f***kn miricle). The edge of the cowl panel (scuttles) in this thing are rooted (as usual in an HQ) and i've been wondering whether it was worth to unpick the lot.



Decided to bite the bullet and unpick the spot welds (prick of a job) and found this loverly surprise.





I'm happy with the fact that there is only a tiny bit in the bottom of the pillar but less than pleased with the fact that someone has attempted to use 'no more gaps' in an attempt to plug the holes... Oh well, its not the worse I've seen but this should keep me busy for a week or two...

Time to have a crack at my rust issue....











Covered it in rust convertor and will layer in in POR15 tomorrow. Had to cut away some more than I thought I would into the lower part of the firewall (not shown) but reasonably happy with how it came out. Not too worred about the weld finishes since its not really a cosmetic area.

Doing the scuttles at the moment, will post that up in the next day or two. And not to bore you with too much details, here is the other side.



Painted all of the plenum with POR15, no rusting any more...
