Theft - noun - the act of stealing; the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another; larceny
Steal - verb - to take (the property of another or others) without permission or right.

Grabbing a VIN from a car for research purposes is not stealing. Is it stealing to write down someones number plate? If they were to remove the tags from a vehicle then H81837K you may have a case.

I think that you are going off half cocked on this one

well this would make ben and warren the biggest monaro thieves in the country, i can just seem them now down the back shed stamping numbers into the imported chinaro,s selling them to the highest bidder as one owner genuine cars, so warren and others if a car has had a respay is it still facory original??? lol

That was the idea in part, but maybe with all the paranoia over tags it might be best not to have any tag info in any future publication.

dont bite the hand that feeds you, Warren and others are very helpful when it comes to questions about Tags etc...
the more data they have the better the answers become.

adam has phrased that very well. Tags & their associated numbers can teach us a lot about the cars themselves.

IMHO there we dont make a fuss over tags, its just the wallys who value a car purely on numbers or even worse stuff around rebirthing etc.

petaus.. I love it "Chinaro" hahahahaha.

Leroy.. Correct, that and the engine number is all that is on my NSW rego papers for the HK.

Adam.. Thankyou and well put.

Dr Terry.. Well put as well, I just get slightly offside when some people here start assuming that anyone who wants to know the ins and outs of tags might be into rebirthing and then start hammering the crap out of them for even asking about it.

Hello Mark,

The details you have posted are correct. This component of the identification does not contain a W character in the 14 digit number. The driveline details are also correct (G80 indicating a limited slip diff.). This vehicle is an HJ GTS sedan assembled at the New Zealand plant from CKD kits supplied from the mainland. There should also be a plate with a 17 digit ISOVIN identification on the vehicle but these are often removed for one reason or another.

Hope this is of use.
