We have 2, 2 year old Hilux 4X4 utes for work, they have both had the rear springs replaced and front ends rebuilt. They are only used on site and only have around 50,000 km on them. They may be as comfortable as a car and go as well , but they do not live up to the tough Hilux name. The last good Hilux was built in Japan. Anything since has been softened too much for highway and around town work. I have just bought a diesel auto Pajero GLS (4X4 of the year). The 10 year drive train warranty and the torque and towing capacity sold me.

Cheers,
Pete.

Triton is way too ugly for me though.

I agree with you on the Triton styling but you have to give Mistubishi credit for going to a lot of effort to make it not look like a box on wheels.

Dont know whether Colorados are different but 4WD Rodeos allegedly had front diff problems which I find feasible as our RWD Rodeo had its (rear) diff centre replaced under warranty just after its 10,000 service no questions asked.

Mitsubishi and Mazda have the best warranties. I think that the Mazda has 5 years unlimited KM.

Another thing about the current Hilux besides it being ugly is that they had a recall on them a year or so ago. The metal is so thin that the bonnets were cracking around the catch on 4WD models thus creating a danger of the bonnet flying open.

The fix for this is so dodgy its unbelievable. They rivet a big black piece of shaped steel to the under side of the bonnet which goes right across. Problem is it makes the bonnet ridiculously heavy to lift and the stay rod hard to get into the now double thickness slot. Could have been eased by fitting gas struts too but Toyota wont do that.

TOYota the first half of the name says it all really.

Bryon, we have a navara dual cab STX 3.0 Diesel here on the mines, it is very uncomfortable and feels very clammy inside.
i a 06 hilux dual cab TDiesel that i did 170000 km in.
could not fault it, although its about another $10K more than the next make.
it had an injector fault replaced at 100000km, and the genuine injectors are $1100 each just for the part.
mine also got the recall for the bonnet catch fault, and they put a black sticker in the door jam to certify that it has been done.

What about a HDJ79 series cruiser (4200 turbo) tray back, these things fly. and are nearly as quick as the 4500 V8. awesome for towing and parts chasing.

WANTED:
-2 14 x 9.25 CSA style Centrelines.
-2 x 15 x 8 Dragway centrelines
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

Has to be new to get the 50% investment allowance. I priced a new cruiser today, about $65,000 for a GXL. ST Patrol pricing today is $46,600 plus tray, DX coil is $45,000. So maybe a new ST with steel powdercoated tray ($2400) and towbar ($600), plus keyless central locking ($330) will be the go, and in 3 years at end of warranty either sell it or turf the 3.0LTD and fit an LS2.
Also considering keeping the Cross8 another 6 months and see what else hits the market. Even considered a new SSV ute, but only 1600kg towing capacity. A new XR8 can tow 2300kg but its a Ford so no good. I just wish one of the manufacturers would sell a Tundra sized ute here. I thought GMH were going down the good path with the Suburban and they even imported them and complianced them as utes for Ambulances but it all dried up. Id even have had an F250 6cyl TD single cab, but they are no more either.

What about one of those supercharged V6 Hilux TuRDs? I know they are not a diesel and possibly not available as a 4WD variant either but they should have some get up and go.

At least if you bought the Ford you would have the satisfaction of knowing that you havent just set a years wages to another country. Can you still get an RTV? they have some off road ability. Drive one you never know you might actually like it 8-).

To me owning a Falcon and driving it in public would be like owning a dress and wearing it to the pub! Each to their own.

Better to be seen driving any Aussie car than to suffer the indignancy of driving a Toyota.

Agreed Jim, we should all be patriotic and buy Aussie built cars.

On that basis our options are limited to Commodore, Cruze?, Falcon, Territory, Camry and Aurion I think.

Dont like front wheel drive? Cruze, Camry & Aurion, Bye.

Think the Territorys too big & thirsty? Bye.

Leaves me limited to the Falcadore with their resale value of nought, guess Im not too fussed with that choice either.

Yes its very sad what we are now limited to.

The fact that Falcadores are not selling in big numbers means that is a couple of years time the market will not be flooded with used ones. This should help their resale but not right now.

I too am not a fan of FWD as I had a couple of Magne company cars in the late 80s. The first an auto carby wagon which was so slow off the mark it was dangerous. The second was a 2600 injection 5 speed which went really well but could grapple for traction at times. I just dont see the logic in a vehicle which shifts its weight away from the driving wheels when those wheels could use more downforce.

I am toying with the idea of replacing my Falcon wagon which has served me well for 11 years. On the list so far is an AU Fairlane, an early (ie not the ugly fronted) AWD Magna, VE wagon (I wish) or shock horror a Subaru Outback.

Sorry Byron we have hijacked your thread.

Just to get back on topic. Another tip might be to visit one or two 4Wd wreckers and ask them what they dont seem to sell many of.

Ive been told that they will sell ten Landcruiser diffs and transfer cases to every one Patrol diff or transfer assembly. Yes there might be more Landcruisers around than Patrols but not ten times as many.

If there is a particular demand for expensive items for certain brands then that brand breaks them often.

Go for it. As mr Bosko pointed out the topic is not pure Holden anyway, but still related.

I have actually gone away a bit from any new stuff. I did locate a really low kM 2007 (sold new) 4.2TD Patrol ute that might be the go. No 50% allowance on the ute, but its about that amount cheaper anyway plus the tipper mechanism, remote central locking and GPS unit qualify for the allowance.
