It started wity my CD player cutting out when i was braking and indicating, and my tacho would flicker (the needle). The tacho and CD share an earth (bracket on the dash). I disconnected the CD player (process of elimination) but now its made me notice other problems. When i brake, my lights dim, all of them, and when i indicate, they flash...bright then dull, in time with the indicator.

What the heck?

I've checked the earths for everything and none are loose. Battery is good, alternator good, good reading (14.something volts at idle).

Thoughts, oh fellow sufferers?

Is there a strap from the battery -ve/0V post to the radiator support? And if there is clean under the bolt/screw that it attaches to, if not add one. Do the saem up under the dash where the bundle of black wires screw to the column support.

So you go for a second earth strap other than terminal to engine block? Ill run one and see if it makes a difference. Ill try the same with the dash wires you mentioned because a faulty earth around there would explain a bit. Cheers.

it always pays to run a good earth to the body as well as the engine, remember the engine and driveline are mounted on rubber, which tends to insulate. lean the body earth, I usually sand back to bare metal and run solder over the mounting point to avoid it clagging up.

Wiring is fun i love it.
The earthing is the most neglected part of most peoples wiring up of something
In all my years of wiring up ambulances i have had no come backs because i run all earths back to the battery.
The ones that have an earth at a bolt down the back or else where have problems.

SOLVED!

A discreet little earth from the terminal to the radiator support and ive got brighter headlights and no flickering of anything :-)

Im guesstimating that as the earth was weak between motor and body, it was highlighted under braking due to current draw, minimum alternator revs/output due to low engine revs, and maybe even the motor/drivetrain shifting under load.

Now to rewire the CD player, but ill run a new earth for that, just to be sure.

If you run all your extras back to the battery you end up with a spiders web of tangled wiring.
If you look at an ordinary household electrical maeter board you will find a brass mounting block usually has lead seal on it, there are about 8 double connecting points on it for running separate wires to.Mount the block in a good place I find the top of the right side inner guard is a good spot as all the wiring runs past it and therefore is convenient for connecting bits.
MAKE SURE that you insulate the block from earthing out. Apiece of rubber tube or something will do this.
Get a large capacity wire, run it from the battery positive to the mounting block, and you then have a connecting point easy to make any connections, driving lights, fans, radio, etc., and easy to change .

Of course id enver run every component back to the terminal. If i did something along those lines id be looking at junction boxes. But for now its all working sweetly, so theres no need for that.

Mack, do you mind if i ask your technique?
