Now is the time to buy a muscle car! 93 cents to the US this morning and ad 10% duty and $2800 delivery and you could pick up some american muscle for under $10,000.

and the good thing about american muscle is you can buy almost any part for your restoration and australia has plenty of dealers.

If you guys ever browse the racingjunk website youd cry at how cheap their modded cars are. If you want street/strip and dont mind something thats not a show winner, you can bring in ten second cars (for example) for less than the cost of a motor here.

Depending on who you go through or who you know, factor on a few grand to get a car here. More leg-work you can do, cheaper it is. Not sure about import duty/taxes etc though.

i looked at importing with Calafornian Image at narangba near my house. bunch of ****ers! price sounded good $600-900 to get the car to california from Vancouver canada then $2800 to australia plus 10% of the cars value. The car was a 327 base model 67 camaro which was in the shed of my father inlaws house he bought, it was for sale for $500. Californian Imagae told me i was full of s*** and they import these cars for a living and were just rude on the phone. so im guessing they like expensive only cause they get there 10%.
My uncle was going to a by a chevelle with a blown bigblock of him shook hands told him to come back in 2 days. he come back and he had sold it because someone offerd him more money. Not a very honest or customer friendly company.

If you were in Sydney (or happy to transport a car from Sydney to your state) I can recommend a good, honest importer, who ships in cars/parts/containers from CA (Long Beach area) to Sydney.

Cheers,

Mick

I dont think the change in the value of our dollar compared to the US dollar has much of an impact until you consider spending $15K - $20k. As much as low prices are touted around for importing to Aus., the realistic cost is closer to $4000 door to door incl. GST. Especially if the car is not on the West coast of USA. A vehicle at a purchase price of $2000 + $4000 import is a $6000 car landed. I suppose the other thing to consider is why bother to buy a car from USA on low price alone? Low purchase price will mean lots of work once landed, spares only available at high price etc. as not much is available here cheaply. If you always wanted one for years, maybe it is more realistic to get one now, but I still believe the lower end of the market is not worthwhile. And, watch out for Mexican reco jobs & Bondo. We use cans of filler, they use 44 gal drums.

Theres always risk. But the biggest gains as i see it are for the buyer who has contacts overseas. Anyone whos been to the US probably knows that its relatively easy to find desirable cars for sale in quite good condition, but getting ahold of them is who you know, not what you know.

Buying from an importer theyre selling desired models and making money, after all, its a business, fair enough.

Right now a mate of mine in Portland is selling his Camaro. Late 70s, great condition, local sale in his area, 7grand. I know the condition of this car and itd cost you over 20grand here from an importer. With the strong Aussie dollar for currency exchange, cutting the middle men out of the process and low rates for shipping, there are literally thousands to be saved.

Not saying its easy, but the opportunity is there.

I still hold that street/drag cars are amazing value. They rarely have collectability "pricing" so you just get what you pay for.
