Ever since i can remember ive waved, given the thumbs up or nod of approval to someone that drives by in a nice car. Doubly so since i started driving my HQ's. Others still do it, pull alongside you to nod and wave, bikers on the Old Pacific highway, other classic drivers, and it always makes me smile.... but of late i'm noticing it happen less and less, whilst the cars are appearing more and more.
Worst culprits are young guys in classic Holdens, usually with horrible big rims, or the fully sick brigade around bankstown who now drive XY falcons instead of WRX's. These guys have the cars because they're "cool".
But even some older guys in nice cars that have clearly been worked on and loved.
Where's the appreciation gone? |

Because it is all about their own self image and being cool, its not about substance it is all about style, so its probably uncool to wave.
No trouble with the HK in that regard, they are so few and far between these days that its a surprise to see one and a wave is a given.

I too was thinking this the other day, driving a Mustang you would invariably get a wave from others but hadnt noticed it in my HQs.
Lately Ive found that its started to happen with the HQs - which is great.

I still give a wave and thumbs up to nicely presented older cars. Of course the assumption is that recipient understands the wave or the thumb. The last XA coupe owner I waved at had no idea.
Always good to see the older cars. Sure beats rice burners.

It still happens a lot when you own a van especially if its a fellow van owner (either make it doesnt matter).

Ive noticed the wave since driving my HQ in perth. I guess it shows theres still a good community spirit around the town and cars make people talk, smile, wave, laugh etc etc. The car can also give you the shyts at times but its worth it.

Im 20 and I give a thumbs up or wave, especially for other Torrys. Ive even had someone in another LX wave with their whole arm out the window once. Though I rarely do anything for Fords lol

Pretty much. The Girlfriend gets a pretty big kick out of the fact that whenever we go on a decent drive and encounter another nice van therell be a wave or a flash of the lights to acknowledge. She calls them my Panel Van friends. Encounter it a fair bit when I drive from Melbourne to the North west or towards and out past Geelong. The city is a different story. See a lot of nice 66 and onwards Mustangs or Valients scooting around, but the drivers tend to keep their heads down. Sign of the times I guess, having personally experienced having my car door opened and being punched in the head because you get noticed by some nutcase teaches you to avoid any kind of eye contact in the city. These days people seem to have replaced the friendly wave with something slightly more aggressive.

talking about the wave, when we tow the caravan other people towing vans wave at us except 4x4 van towers they must be snobby and only wave at other 4x4`s...lol

Its gone. it only happens out in the bush now. i think its mainly to do with respect and courtesy, you could be sure of help if need be. if you lived in the sticks and some one did not wave you would think that person could be a problem.
In my job in the last few years i have come across more then 50% who have a blatant intent to deceive or con and just talk and ague absolute nonsense. i record these conversations now. i am going to wright a book about builders and there tricks tactics and tenacity.

Still no wave here in Sydneys CBD. Driving yesterday saw some nice ones, no waves. Even saw a bloke sitting at the lights in a full-blown MFP patrol replica! I tooted and waved and he just stared blankly ahead.

I just got back from a cruise up and down the coast with the manditory bog laps at Scabs, Cott and Freo in the PV, and i have now got RSI from all the waves and thumbs up
So i guess we here in Dullsville are yet to catch up to those east of the rabbit proof fence

I always give the wave or thumbs up.... just not to newer car owners (esp Jap cars, even though I own one and can respect tasteful mods) cause you never know when some goose is going to pull a gun on you!!

I dont really understand why you think anyone should be waving at some clapped out taxi anyway. Sure if you had a decent car you might expect it occasionally, but a poxy old HQ Kingswood? You must be kidding.

I know when we bought my commodore how the other week, got a wave from a few people probably because they thought we were taking it to scrap, also atracted a right pair of idiots in a vp wagon towing a VH burnout wagon blocking the road trying to light up the back wheels to show off... Older cars are easier to wave to, and wave from. No aircon. The windows are down. If the car looks the part, I will always wave. Mind you if HQFORME has a blue HQ with black front panel, hes pretty hard to wave at....hes quick!
