Im looking at buying a van that is a HJ Sandman.
The only thing is the compliance plate which has the XX7,paint code etc has been taken off it and lost.
Is there a way that i'll be able to get it rego'd again without this plate and am i able to get a letter from holden or something to prove that it IS a Sandman?
Thanks in advance.

you sort of can, provided the van is oct 1975 onwards ( as the GVM will be 1950Kg) on the ADR tag.
this counts for XX7 only.
if its XU3, the GVM will be the same as a base model.

a letter from holden isnt worth much cred at all.

You can get it regoed again, they will use the chassis number.

this wouldnt happen to be a van in Perths northern surburbs???? by chance??

Unless its a Brisbane build, HJ can be impossible to identify from the ID plates, so even if you do convince yourself it is an XX7 and spend $ restoring it you have to then convince someone when you try to sell it. My advice would be to buy one that is identifiable, unless of course its a mint original thing. Basically what Im saying is if you intend to throw money at it, make sure you can identify it first or you might as well spend money on a non-Sandman which will be heaps cheaper to start with.

1.How much is it costing you? 2.What condition is it in?. Does it have the headlining rail at the back? 4.Was it a console car ,as in auto or manual from the FACTORY ? 5.Has it got interior light switches on the door jams?
6.What sort of wiring is in the car(IE gts , sports kind of wiring)?.7.Does it have a glove box plaque(Tyre rating)? 8.Although it may not have XX7 on it,remember there were other factorys.8. Having ALL of the above certainly narrows it down.9.Are you building it to sell or keep?10. what colour was it from the factory?.....And last BUT NOT LEAST ... READ BYRONS LINK ON THIS FORUM,its quite impressive with photos, make up your mind on all of these questions and decide whether or not to build it....cheers Jim.....PS LOOKS like you already bought it anyway so question 1 and 2 are out...lol

Its not so much as its a Sandman, its basically just that the plate is missing and im worried it may cause an issue when it comes to rego.
I will be customising it anyway so the stock look wont be what im after.
I also have a HZ BO6 van now that has been slightly modified.

Got the tags. :D
Brisbane built 5/75 in Deville Blue.

Did they have a large Sandman sticker on the tailgate?
Not like the HX/HZ ones, but i thought i saw one somewhere which was a full width Sandman but in the same running writing as the side stickers.

nice colour.

HJ should have the 2 lines on the tailgate.

maybe paint two tailgates and do the early style and the later style, as the sandman sticker looks better....IMHO

and keep the original one in the shed...
