Can I ask for opinions as to what are the pros and cons of factory engine mounted clutch fan with shroud vs aftermarket thermo fans?

I like thermos ,and hate clutch fans,with thermos +no power loss and i think they cool alot better,clutch fans stop and need replaced. Ive had 4 on various cars and they are all f@#ked,they are crap.!

Ive never had an iron headed SBC in a Holden cool properly with thermo fans, only viscous fan and shroud ever seem to work. 308s dont seem to be as bad, but my Overlanders 308 didnt like low speed 4x4 work without engine getting hot and I wouldnt like to have seen it with thermos unless they were setup right.

I agree with HK1837.

If you have a large cammy engine that gets borderline hot in traffic, a good viscous fan & shroud will out-perform electric fans any day.

Also its not a fair comparison to compare new electric fans with a 2nd hand viscous fan clutch that was probably 10 or 15 years old & half dead, before it was fitted.

I know from experience with electric fans in late model cars that fan motors themselves have a finite life of around 160,000 km or 8-10 years. Most GM type viscous clutches will live longer than that.

The main reasons that manufacturers use electric fans nowadays is that they are cheaper to make, easier to control (via the ECU) & dont drain as much power at high RPM. Electric fans still drain power, but its via the alternator & its not as continuous.

Twin Thermo fans fitted and matched to applications properly are no trouble,I just hate clutch fans(even thou Ive got some on my cars),just another thing to stop working.I dont know your application so I wouldnt know whats the better option,horses for courses,hate to guess.Comparing both new ,I would still pick the thermos for the same reasons that Dr Terry described.Also a solid fit fan may be an option(or a combo of both),and take into account the radiator ,shroud etc.

i have an aluminium aussie desert cooler with twin thermos running a mid range chev. Works a treat even in 35-40 heat
