Pulled over for an RBT on sat night. Normally i try and avoid the CBD on friday or saturday, but i promised some mates id be somewhere. Sure enough, RBT road blocks all over the place.

Cop was ok, but commented that my car was "awful loud mate" ...fair enough, i run a hotdog, no real muffler. So he asked to have a look.

Cop: "These tyres mate, they're not stock are they"
Me: "nah"
Cop: "mate, they're bloody huge!"

They're 245/60 on an 8inch rim on the back.

Cop: "what's with this crack in the windscreen?"
Me: "ah, it's just a crack?"

It's actually pretty badly cracked but i've glued it to stop it spreading.

At this point i thought i was going to get dragged over the coals...but it turned out okay. We popped the bonnet...he didn't know what he was looking at but new it wasn't stock, so he asked and i told.

We talked about some stuff, and what it came down to was this: i know my car is illegal in small ways...tyres too wide, little bit loud, crack in windscreen could cause defect, maybe few other details....and he knew all this. However, he liked the car, he told me he did, i was nice to him, treated him like another person, not like a "cop" and he just politely suggested that i get it all engineered so i don't have to worry.

An arsehole could have thrown the book at me and dragged it down for EPA testing.

I guess the moral is a bit of respect goes both ways. Even though we ALL know stories of cops being total dicks, when you're in that situation, you'd damn well better give the officer the benefit of the doubt.

Oops wrong button....anyway

1. I always make sure where you pull over is safe and get out of the car (probably not a good idea at a Booze Bus);

2. I always be nice - they deal with turds all the time, I try to be different;

3. I admit it if you have done something wrong - i reckon they must have heard any excuse i can come up with and, anyway i live by never bullsh*t a bullsh*tter.

4. I try and lighten it a bit (no sarcasm).

Many times i will get off with a caution (but sometimes still get a ticket - which i deserve.

One time, i was driving home from a concert in my old HX GTS/4. I get pulled over after doing around 95 in a 70 zone.

The police pull me over and tells me he had to do over 100 to catch up and that i must have been speeding (pre-dates speed detectors in cars). Anyway, i got out, had a bit of a chat with them about the car (which had 4 sweaty blokes who were drunk and carrying on). It was all amiable and all good, and i copped that i had been going a bit quick.

After a minute a second car pulled up (i think after that there were 4 cops in total - 3 blokes and one female).

I was asked by one of the fellas whether i had been drinking.

I said no and a female officer says to me but you could have had something else couldnt you. I could see she was serious which irritated me a little so i turned around and screamed Aaargh, youve got bugs coming out of your ears.

The three cops and my mates in the car just about wet themselves laughing - but she didnt think it was very funny.

Long story short, the car got searched and looked over twice and she continued to let me know in no uncertain terms that she was unimpressed.

After all this, the guys said nice car - take it easy and left.

No ticket no caution - and i can drink on the story....

My rules:
(1) Only stop for marked cars ONLY. If in doubt ring 000.
(2) If a marked car pulls you over, make sure you are out of your car before they get out of theirs.
(3) Be polite - dont be a smart. Smile.
(4) Many Police do like older cars or bikes.

trubluhq, if you kept driving from an unmarked car wouldnt they just get pissed, probably assume you were evading them and eventually make you stop?

Was thanked: 1 time(s) in 1 post(s)
I lived next door to a cop once. He was a good laugh. He always told me to never get out of the car, as people in the car are controlable, people outside the car are not. So I always stay in the car unless instructed otherwise. He also said to shake a bit when handing over your licence, as this is sposed to show respect. And never ever be a smart arse. They are told to never defect the driver, only defect the car, BUT in 90% of cases they are defecting the driver, ie putting a defect on the car because the driver gave them attitude. But you can also go too far, he said that "if they seem to be trying to suck me off" I will still book em.

So, stay in the car, show respect, be polite and you will have the best chance of getting out of the ticket. But at the end of the day, some of us are gunna get a fine no matter how petty the offence, the government needs that revenue.

yeah NSW is getting like east LA, if you get out of your car you might get shot.... have a cuzz whos wears the blue, in there training, if a driver gets out of the car it will be classed as an agressive action, or an attempt to evade capture, the female officers are told to use capsicum spray or tazzers at any hint of aggression, (tazzers... always think of star trek when I hear that word).

Vic traffic also dislike you getting out of your vehicle, ever since two were bashed on the hume free way a few years back.

And if you ever drive the newell Hwy (specially in a old car) & a big white 4X4 comes racing up from behind & sits on your arse, dont panic & speed, its the drug unit trying to stop the flow of lawn clippings from adelaide to Qld, spent a hour watching them empty out the car searching for "Stuff", but they were nice & helped to put it all back, once we explained we were heading up to Qld for a wedding...

In NSW if you pullover for any unmarked car you may also lose your car, maybe never see your ride again or worse...."the locals" can come around for a cuppa later. They know where u live. Better to be judged by 6 than carried out by 4.

Ahhh the old days when you could actually get out of the car and talk to the cop and 99.9% of the time get off with a warning.
Now when you are being pulled up get out the wallet as thats all they are after. 99.9% of the time now they are already writing out the fine. I was pulled up in one of those easy money areas a while ago and got out to talk to him , he was already writing out the fine as I walked back. He asked for my licence so I gave him my mastercard and when he asked "whats this" I replied just give it a swipe the moneys all your after.
Here in Echuca we have a constant barrage of cameras in those long easy money backstreet 50Kph areas and a mate lately has been reversing up to them blocking the camera and sitting reading a book. Now they are telling us no tolerance for the new VIC road laws, but there seems to be heaps of tolerance for the local street gangs, bashings, breakins and general arseholes. Too hard and No money in that sort of crap
