Hi blackfj, A real pity your question wasnt anwered correctly. I am very interested in HQ Monaros and can say that a base Monaro with the standard engine and transmission is very very rare. I use the Monaro guy Ben Stewart to verify facts and details on these cars as he can in most cases supply a sensible answer that is correct. He told me recently that he has only found 17 such cars built by Holden.

given that you had to rev the 173 in a HQ upto 4000 rpm before changing to second gear, it would be very rare, and it made it through the eighties and early ninties without copping a chev and flairs makes it even rarer.

Hi All,as I said earlier in this thread, back then a 173 column shift wasnt too exciting so most people changed them, now we are trying to get them back to what they were before we changed them, ironic isnt it. P.S. Adam ,Ive got a standard 253 column manual(3 speed) HX wagon and you go about 15 feet and have to change gear ,its got 3.55 diff in it from the factory, its crap! but the most reliable little sucker Ive ever had.
