Hi there
When changing LSD oil in a diff, does it matter if the oil is hot or will gravity do the job if I let it drain for 24hrs or so??
Think the oils gone off in the diff after it's been sitting for so long, so I was hoping some new oil and some miles in a circle might stop all the noise that's coming from what's supposedly a reco, but very tight diff.

Noise could be uni joint bearings & nothing to do with the diff.
Disconect tail shaft & spin the rear wheels, if no noise its the uni joint.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I greased the uni joint (didnt take much).
The noise is like a clattering noise - almost like a typewriter.
Diff was supposedly reconditioned 5 years ago and has been sitting still ever since.
Ford 9inch LSD that seems to be very tight - even when pushing it around the driveway.

im not sure about the ford 9 inch, but the way the oil is drained from most diffs and manual gearboxs is to remove the bottom (lowest) bolt, it usally doubles as a sump plug, ive never drained it hot/warm, and i seem to get all the oil the color/condition of the oil will tell a story, if it new looking then its never been used (like the seller said) if its black and smells really bad its had a hard life, chances are it just needs to be ran in Edited by user Thursday, 19 November 2009 6:05:38 AM(UTC)

jack it up and check brakes ,axles / bearings and free play .drain the oil refill with new oil anyway.start with that and let us know.

OK - found the rattle.
Not going to tell you what it was as that would just prove how stupid I am.
Good news is the oil looks brand new when I undid the filler plug on the diff - so I havent changed it for now.
How the gearbox is the same - may check tomorrow.
Taking it for a drive tomorrow - yeehaaah!!!!

Unfortunately theres been rumors getting around that it was loose wheel nuts.
I cannot confirm or deny this except to say never let your son do up the wheelnuts unless you check them after :)

Better still never let anyone including your best mate do up the wheel nuts without you checking afterwards. Never let your best mate install uni joints for you either 8-)
