I am in the process of swaping a EFI V8 and Th700 out of a VQ Statesman in to a HQ. Most things are good moter running etc but having problems with the Auto. The HQ was originally a column shift and I want to put the VQ T-Bar shifter into it but I dont want to cut holes in the floor. I have heard that you can instead of using the Shifter linkage and cuttng a hole in the floor that you can change it to a cable shifter thus only having to dril a single hole.

Has anyone done this or point me in the right direction I didnt really want a aftermarket shifter would prefer to stick with the VQ or alternatively a period correct one.

Cheers

Ive only ever fitted an aftermarket cable shifter to them. This would be your easiest option.

I cant see how youll get the original shifter to work without mounting it to the floor, or building a box to moint on the floor, then mount the VQ shifter plate onto it. Bear in mind, that it only needs a hole abou the size of a tennis ball to poke through & provide enough clearance for the rod/lever.

One thing you have to watch, is you must retain the gear position indicator, or you will be defected, which means youll need a lot more than just the lever.

Cheers,

Mick

Thanks Mick,

yep was gunna mount the other shifter using brackets to get around cutting the floor but an aftermarket shifter may have to be the option.

Does anyone know if you can use a T499 cable type and convert it?

I picked up a TH700 cable type shifter at a swap meet once. I was told that it came from a Camaro or Firebird but the button was on the right not the left so it was obviously from a RHD car or at least a converted one.

You might find one of those on Ebay US or similar. Failing that 6 cyl VLs had a cable shifted T bar so you might be able to hybridise a shifter from a VL and your VQ items.

Another thought if you want to think outside the box a bit. Why not get the gear linkages out of a bench seat VG, VN, VP VT or VS and connect them to your hqs column?

Simple and effective as the HQ column should have enough movement for the extra gear but you will have to re mark the gear positions on the quadrant & if it doesnt the worst that you will have is P R N D D and 2 with no 1 manually selectable.

Thanks jim5.0, I did think about the column option I know you can buy a cable fairly straight forward ?? but would then need to make up some brackets. i have also heard that the TH400 ran a cable at some point but I cannot seem to confirm that they all seem to be linkage?

TH400 had a cable floor shift in HX & HZ DeVille & Caprice.
