Hi all (Warren if youre out there)

Pulled the tacho out this arvo and found a dial on the rear that says 6 and 8 cylinder. It seemed to be pointed at 8 but I fiddled around and changed a few things.

There seems to be 4 'stops' on the dial, or 5 if you count the one that does nothing.

I got the idle speed right when I set it away from the 6 and the 8, but it wasn't reading right when reving.

Anyone point me in the right direction?

Otherwise, I hope Premier instruments are open on Monday....

Cheers

Jeremy

Id take the tacho to the instrument shop and get them to calibrate it.

Hang on a moment. I seem to remember there was something unusual about fitting a tacho to a VN. It may have been for V6 models only though.

Mick am I completely off the mark?

Interesting idea Jim, but surely a tacho is a tacho is a tacho. Shouldnt matter what its hooked up to as long as its calibrated correctly.

Maybe these threads might be of some help I suppose that the HG tacho would be treated as an aftermarket one on your VN wiring:

http://forums.justcommod...63-how-put-tacho-vn.html

http://forums.justcommod...timate-tacho-thread.html

According to my HG manual the pink wire comes from the power source and the dark brown wire goes to the distributor side of the coil so it should join the brown tacho signal wire on your harness.

If at first you dont succeed then skydiving is not for you.

Hi Jim

I get the same reading direct from the coil.

Interesting theres supposed to be a tacho feed at the ECU - thatll make it easier to run the cable.

Think Ill call Premier and see if theyre still open.

Cheers

Yeah, it is only the V6, as they dont have a traditional coil, so you need to use the tacho feed in the engine harness (which is the same tacho feed at the ECU).

The V8s can run the tacho off he coil, the wire in the engine harness about a foot forward of the firewall grommet (behind the LH strut tower in a commodore) or from the ECU - its all the same signal in a V8.

Cheers,

Mick

Check the tacho on another ca, just run + to pink - to black and brown to coil - terminal (between coil and distributor). If it works there then follow Micks instructions.

Don,t know if this will help.Just fitted commodore red 308 in a HT so has HEI dissy. My gts dash doing the same thing, idle ok but wild movement when reving. I cut ballast wire short and soldered normal wire to it. so 12volts at coil, wired ammeter same as factory wiring diagram. The tacho, I added an earth not much change so swapped + and - on tacho and set to 8 and it now works plus the oil pressure guage came to life as well. I have 12 volts on both tacho wires and the wire colours are swapped around from the wiring diagram but they bell out to the correct locations on the coil etc. So I don,t know why but it works!
