Hi guys. just wondering what peoples thoughts are on secondhand extractors/headers? I have changed a few 308s and 253s over in my day, usually leaving the extractors in and slotting the engine in between. Prick of a job and usually found the extractors were a real pain to bolt to the new engine, which i assume is due to the heat over the years moulding them to the other engine a bit..? Secondhand extractors often come up and i want to put some on the VH T30 but am wondering if its best to avoid them altogether and just get new ones. Im being tight obviously.. Cheers.

Goodaye Paul, I use second hand ones now n then.I think to fit them the best way is to "loosen" the whole exhaust ,then do the extractors up at the engine, then retighten the rest going from front to back.this seems to "untension "the whole exhaust. Its also a good idea to get a good brand ie pacemakers they seem to be a "better fit" and obviosly their condition in the first place...just my opinion..

Ive used them in the past, but only on Holden 6s. Even with the sixes, one trap is the extractor design for the motor in certain engine bays. Ensure that you are actually getting what the guy says, he may be guessing on the model for correct fit. Also, if you are able, take a straight edge, steel ruler, or something to sit on the bolt up face for any warping that may have occurred through heat/time. Look for carbon around the welds indicating a leak. Why are they being sold too? Dont want to buy some other pricks trouble. New ones are far more of a sure thing though, but dearer.

I had a second hand set fitted years ago and the mechanic used 2 gaskets instead of one incase they had slight warping, seemed to do the job.

John and Cloudy are right,I have also used 2 gaskets and that works ,new bolts too.The thing with extractors is they are usually a headache to put in(unless they are there already)so if they arent going in right, buy NEW ones and save somewhere else.(prefferably an easier area to get back too.)

i had a hj stato with a 350 i fitted new extractors i never used a gasket i used exhaust sealer straight to the head red stuff from memory never ever had a leak.
with a gasket they allways seem to work loose and i think the gasket gets hard spots in the around the port if you tighten them up you bend the flange all over for ever leaking.
just my two cents, pete.

Thanks for the comments guys. I reckon new ones are probably the way to go unless a decent 2nd hand set appears. Will keep an eye out but Im in no rush. Cheers.
