Its a late HQ early HJ block by the engine number, theres a date code on top of the block above the oil pump.

The main reason most people avoid them is because it will cost just as much to work a 253 as 308, so they start with a bigger motor and get more HP when finished.

In its stock form its a good motor, I have one in my VH SL/E, a quick upgrade would be a electronic dissy and a 4 barrel quad with the smaller jets as per the VC and VHs.

Keeo,They are a good motor and as James says above, that is the reason that people
use 308 engines instead of 253s(power),depends on what you want and what youve already got.I have a 253 that runs great but still changed it for a 308 for a little more power ,but I will keep it as a spare.I think they are underrated as an engine and quite like them.Funny enough if your rebuilding a "collectable car"that had a 253 in it,all of a sudden its doesnt seem
to be a bad engine ..lol..still they are good engines, with a small cam and some nice heads, they sound nice enough and their power band so to speak is perfect for the street....just my thoughts.

Hi all.,..253s arent really worth rebuilding if you want a fair bit of power because you can build a 308 for the same price(starting with 60 more horsepower)what the above comment means is that people view a 253 differently ,if you had a sandman, monaro,ss or alike then to get the car back to close to original you may need a 253,hence not viewed the same as someone that is just putting a motor in a normalish car. I must stress I am NOT knocking anyone I am just saying that all the engines have their place , and I like 253s as well. For example an LC GTR torana with a 308 ,very desirable... an LC GTR torana with an original sized engine ,probably more desirable.just my opinions.

theres nothing wrong with 253s i have 1 in my HQ, 1 in my tonner and 1 in my HQ ambo, they sound great and go good

the thing is, if you spend $5000 doing up 253 and $5000 on a 308 the end result is going to be more power from a 308, but as standard engine the 253s are fine, i like them

Biggest engine will probably always be worth the most even though smaller engines might be rarer eg HJ LS, HQ-HZ Sandman etc. What I mean is a HJ LS with 202 is rarer than an LS with 253 or 308 but which one would you choose to be the best collector? Dave, the HQ SS isnt a fair comparison as they only ever had a 253! Commo, any VH Group 3 is desirable, but I think you are right that for the same car in the same condition one with a 308 would get bought first with most people. But offer me the 253 Group III or a 308 SL/E and Id choose the Group III.

That is "exacly" what I am saying, its all a matter of horses for courses.collector markets are whatever people want ,they decide what theyll pay ...6cyl ..or ..8cyl... 2 door... 4 door, ss ,ls ,gts.
original will "ALWAYS" command more dollars,I just buy em if I like em..jmo. 253s are good.
