I'm new to all this, really new! The last car I worked on was my HB torana when I was 19... I'm now 45, and probably only changed 2 tyres in all that time!

Hi Blocker, congrats on the HJ Sandman I enjoyed reading your blog on it. One thing I note is you mention the factory sunroof leaking.... Sandmans did not come with factory fitted sunroofs, it is an aftermarket sunroof.

Here is a HJ Sandman interior photo from my HJ Sandman brochure for you to reference during your restoration.

Thanks mate, I have amended the blog. And thanks for the brochure pic too, this is a great reference. Interesting that this shows no radio and therefore having a full clean panel where the radio would go.

Its so hard to find good factory reference material because these cars were optioned so many ways (like my missus Capri).

The Sandman was an option package available on the standard Holden van/ute and the Kingswood ute only, option XX7 or XU3 depending on load capacity. It was a standard package but you could add optional extras to it.

HJ Sandman van came standard with 173ci engine, drum brakes all round, 4sp gearbox, door operated courtesy light, no radio, GTS sports instrumentation with clock, flow through ventilation only, bucket seats with full console, loop pile carpet, full length hood lining, GTS steering wheel, blacked out grill and headlight surrounds, 6" wide all steel sports wheels vented for brake cooling, GTS slotted front guards and paint outs (Decals) available in your choice of either black or white.

Options available:
Power assisted front discs (standard on V8)
Choice of 4.2L or 5.0L V8 engines
T Bar Auto
Limited slip diff
Superlift shock absorbers
Fast ratio 16.7:1 manual steering box
Variable ratio power steering
Wheel trim rings
Metallic paint
Forced air ventilation
Fully integrated Air Conditioning (Factory fitted)
Choice of radios or radio cassette
Tail tent

Hope this helps you out with your restoration, Byron may be able to add to it if Ive missed anything.

Also HJ Sandman vans had painted tail light surrounds not chromed and the air vent in your drivers side is incorrect as it should be the standard HJ revolving type.

Once again great material, thank you!

Its getting very difficult to know where I want to stop with the restoration of original parts and where to allow for replacements.

For instance I need a new dash fascia because the radio space has been hacked, but the re-pros are not HJ fascias.

The GTS fascia for my HX Sandman van was cracked from the clock hole down between the idiot lights and the radio hole was butchered, I took it down to my local paint shop and had some paint mixed to match the painted dash.... it is actually a gun metal grey rather than silver... the silver decals available on Ebay are a joke.

I have a HX parts sedan that had a excellent dash fascia in it with original radio panel so I cut the undamaged radio panel from the standard dash and plastic welded it into my GTS fascia and welded up the crack under the clock, after sanding smooth I re-painted the fascia and it looks like new. Cost me less to buy the paint and repair the original dash than buying a repro.

Youre right. I have a set of 4 of the HJ-HZ vents and a pair of these.

Ive also got GM publicity pics of a HJ Sandman (forced ventilation/2 vent) model, which is the same as mine and it shows these older HQ vents. So its a bit confusing at the moment.

Those are the correct style revolving vents for your HJ Sandman Blocker. They are correct for base model HJs with flow through ventilation. Cars fitted with flow through ventilation only had those style vents on the right side of the dash instrument panel and to the far left of the dash pad only.

Forced air ventilation was an option on base model HJ including the Sandman and if optioned you got two extra vents in the middle of the dash, the blank panel to the left of the gauge cluster was cut out for the extra vent and a dash pad with an extra vent to the right of the glovebox was fitted, air was forced through the two middle vents via the heater fan. The two outer vents remained flow through only via the vent from the plenum chamber. All four vents were changed to the fingertip louvre style when fitted with forced air.

I believe HJ Kingswood had all four louvred vents as flow through fitted standard and forced air was an option. Forced air was standard on HJ GTS models.



The panel to the left of your gauge cluster has not been removed so you had flow through ventilation only. I have not seen too many HJ Sandmans with forced air ventilation fitted. Forced air ventilation was standard in the HX and HZ Sandman.

Gives me some insight as to what Ill be expecting when I can get around to doing the same to my tonner.
