I have been given a cylinder head for the Morris Minor I am rebuilding. someone has had a go at porting and polishing the head and in the process has worn away the wall in one port through to the water.
They have attempted to repair it by brazing.
Is this safe and reliable? Brazing in my experience tends to self destruct.
Also I have been told that it is not a good idea to polish the walls of intake ports by some, and to polish them by others. What is the true benefit to be gained by polishing intake ports?

John,
As with any cast iron welding - you need to pre-heat the head very well. In your case here, brazing is the best option.
Heat the area well with the oxy torch with a carbourised flame, very intense white pointed centre tip and blue hazed outer flam

When you go into water from polishing/porting I have heard that you are supposed to braze in some copper tube into the hole, so that water can still pass. |
